SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University baseball team was swept in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division doubleheader by No. 28 Seton Hill University Saturday at Critchfield Park.
Â
Two big innings in each game proved too much for The Rock to overcome as the nationally ranked Griffins used a five-run second inning in the opener to spearhead a 12-6 win, while a seven-run fourth inning in game two was the catalyst for a 10-7 victory.
Â
Slippery Rock exits the day at 10-6 overall and 0-2 inside the PSAC. Seton Hill leaves The Rock at 14-5 overall and 2-0 in conference competition.
Â
SRU was led on the day by
Clay Wiesen, who went a combined 3-for-5 with four runs scored, one RBI, a triple and one walk. In his first six games played of 2026, Wiesen has gone 8-for-19 (.421 AVG / .500 OB%) with nine runs, one home run and four RBIs.
Â
Michael Kitko also collected three hits and two runs over the doubleheader. The duo of
Darryn Callahan and
Gage Gillott had hits in both ends of Saturday's doubleheader as well, with Callahan driving in three runs and earning one walk as well.
Â
Following its six-run loss in the opener, Slippery Rock struck first in game two with a two-run second inning courtesy of RBIs from
Brandon Butler and
Morgen Billotte.
Â
The lead was short-lived though as the Griffins proceeded to score 10 consecutive runs over the following four innings to take a seemingly safe 10-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth.
Â
Undeterred by the sizable deficit, Slippery Rock showed commendable heart to pull itself back into the game. The Rock's comeback bid began with an RBI-double by Callahan that plated
Aari Fox, who pinch ran for
Treston Nemeth following Nemeth's base hit earlier in the frame.
Â
The seventh inning saw back-to-back singles from Gillott and Kitko and later a
Landon Hamer walk to load the bases with just one out. Wiesen brought in the first run of the inning on a single to centerfield followed by
Jake Robinson driving a bases-clearing double to right-center to cut Seton Hill's lead down to just three runs at 10-7.
Â
The rally continued in the form of a Callahan walk to put runners on first and second with the potential game-tying run coming to the plate. However, the comeback bid ended there as Seton Hill called on relief pitcher Christian Zilli, who was able to end the threat by forcing a game-deciding double play.
Â
Wiesen was 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI in the nightcap while reaching base a third time after being hit by a pitch. In addition to driving in three runs, Robinson also reached base three times on one hit, one walk and being hit by a pitch.
Â
Callahan and Nemeth each reached base twice thanks to one hit and one walk. Callahan has now reached base in 12 consecutive games.
Â
SRU used three pitchers in game two.
Parker Hogge (3-1) made his second start of the season, going three innings with six runs allowed on four hits and a walk. Out of the bullpen,
Joey Vanzin surrendered four runs over 3.2 innings before turning the seventh over to
Dawson Wallace, who made his collegiate debut with an inning-ending strikeout.
Â
Mark Wechtenhiser (2-1) earned the win for SHU after scattering three runs over 5.2 innings. Luke McCoy gave up four runs in 0.2 innings with Zilli earning the save on the double play.
Â
Slippery Rock and Seton Hill conclude their four-game PSAC West series with another doubleheader Sunday at SHU. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
