Rock concludes PSAC West series vs. No. 28 Seton Hill

The Slippery Rock baseball team concluded its first PSAC West series of the 2026 season with two losses Sunday at No. 28 Seton Hill.

GREENSBURG, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University baseball team concluded its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division series of the 2026 season with two losses Sunday at No. 28 Seton Hill University.

The Rock lost the opener, 7-3, followed by a 10-8 setback in game two. SRU closes the weekend with a 10-8 overall record and an 0-4 mark inside the PSAC West. The series sweep improved the nationally ranked Griffins' record to 16-5 overall and 4-0 in league play.

SRU was guided Sunday by the trio of Jake Robinson, Stone Powell and Treston Nemeth.

Robinson reached base five times over the doubleheader, going a combined 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored, four RBIs and two walks. Powell and Nemeth were both 3-for-7 in the two games, with Powell hitting a solo home run, scoring three times and walking once.

GAME 1: SHU 7 – SRU 3
W: Sean Williams (4-1)
L: Gage Gillott (0-2)
S: Zach Herb (4)

The Griffins scored five consecutive runs and fended off a late Rock rally to preserve a 7-3 victory in the opener.

Trailing 5-0 after SHU plated two runs in the first inning and three more in the fifth, Slippery Rock posted a three-run sixth when Robinson connected on an RBI-single followed later by a two-run single from Brandon Butler before Seton Hill got out of the big inning by stranding two runners on base with a 5-3 lead.

The Griffins tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth while relief pitcher Zach Herb – who entered the game in the sixth prior to Butler's hit – retired SRU in order in the seventh to close out the two-run win.

Butler went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double in game one. Powell, Nemeth, Robinson and Clay Wiesen all had hits as well with Powell's coming by way of double.

Gage Gillott (0-2) made his second start of the season on the mound. He pitched 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on five hits and two walks along with four strikeouts. Nolan Comerford (0.2 IP, 1 R, 1 K) and Michael Kitko (1 IP, 1 R, 1 K) combined to pitch the final 1.2 innings out of SRU's bullpen.

GAME 2: SHU 10 – SRU 8
W: Christian Zilli (2-0)
L: Mark Wilbur (1-2)

Runs were plentiful for both The Rock and Griffins over the early stages of game two as the two PSAC West foes combined for 18 runs on 17 hits over the first four innings of a back-and-forth contest that ultimately went to Seton Hill, 10-8.

Four different Rock athletes collected multi-hit games. Robinson was 2-for-3 with one run, three RBIs, a double and walk. Powell also went 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, one walk and his first homer of 2026.

Nemeth and Anderton were both 2-for-4. Anderton drove in one run and Nemeth scored twice. Darryn Callahan had The Rock's other hit and Wiesen walked twice on the way to scoring two runs.

SRU used three pitchers in the final game of the weekend. Starting pitcher Zachary Hare allowed five runs on three hits and three walks in 0.2 innings before giving way to Mark Wilbur (1-2), who went two innings with four runs yielded on six hits and two walks.

Cole Grady had the best pitching performance of the day for The Rock, throwing 3.1 innings with eight strikeouts and just one unearned run allowed on no hits and three walks.

After not scoring until the sixth inning of game one, SRU rattled off three runs in the first inning of game two when Robinson drew a bases-loaded walk with a two-run Callahan single coming on the next at-bat.

A dangerous Seton Hill offense answered by tallying six runs in the next two innings to briefly take a 6-3 advantage into the third inning.

The Rock and Griffins traded big innings in the third when SRU produced four runs via a two-run single from Robinson, an RBI-single from Anderton and a sacrifice fly by Gillott which allowed Robinson to score.

Seton Hill countered by going for three runs in the bottom of the frame, pushing its lead back out to 9-7.

While SRU again cut into the Griffins' lead in the fourth courtesy of Powell's home run to lead off the frame, Slippery Rock was unable to find the game-tying run as SHU stranded Robinson, who hit a two-out double before taking third on a Seton Hill error, on base to end the fourth followed by relievers Christian Zilli (2-0) and Herb closing out the victory by coming in to pitch three shutout innings.

After its brief journey away from home, Slippery Rock returns to Critchfield Park to host Walsh University for a nine-inning game 3 p.m. March 24. The non-conference matchup with the Cavaliers will serve as SRU's 14th home game in its last 16 outings.
