Defense propels No. 7 Rock by Lander, 9-4

No. 7 Slippery Rock women's lacrosse improved to 6-0 on the year after earning a 9-4 win on the road at regional opponent Lander University Saturday in South Carolina.

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The seventh ranked Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 6-0 lead and controlled the game from start to finish on the way to earning a 9-4 regional win on the road at Lander University in South Carolina Saturday.

The Rock improve to 6-0 on the year and pick up their 16th straight regular season win while improving to 2-1 in the series against Lander. The Bearcats drop to 4-5 overall on the year with their third loss to a top 10 ranked opponent.

SRU limited its fourth straight opponent to six goals or fewer and held a team to single-digit goals for the fifth time in six games this spring. The Rock have now outscored their last four opponents 60-17 combined.

Slippery Rock tallied four goals in the first quarter and added two more early in the second quarter to open up a 6-0 lead that proved to be too much for the hosts to recover from. The Rock led 6-1 at halftime and extended the lead to 8-2 entering the fourth quarter.

SRU finished with advantages of 28-16 in total shots, 19-6 in shots on goal and 25-12 in ground balls while causing 16 of 27 total turnovers by the Bearcats. Lander managed a 9-7 edge in draw controls.

All of the scoring Saturday came from just five players with Reagan Richeson and Abby Fink leading the way with four points each. Fink scored four goals in the first half and Richeson finished with three goals and one assist. Cadyn Eismann and Isabella Buono each scored one goal and handed out one assist and Maddie Blazey finished with one assist to cap the scorers.

Paige Jenkins led the defense with four caused turnovers and four ground balls to go along with two draw controls. Gemma Sciarroni, Aleigha Dubroc, Grace Rotter and Mckenzie Murphy were all credited with two caused turnovers.

Lily Ventresca picked up the win in goal to improve to 5-0 on the year after being credited with two saves and allowing just four goals.

Lander was led by goalie Emersin Clamp, who made her first start of the season and finished with 10 saves. Kylie Fragala led the attack with two goals.

Slippery Rock will stay in South Carolina over spring break and will play a second regional road game with a trip to Newberry College next Wednesday at 4 p.m.
