NEWBERRY, S.C. – The seventh ranked Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team improved to 7-0 and picked up a 17th straight regular season victory with an 11-6 win on the road at Newberry College Wednesday to close out a two-game spring break trip.
Â
The win also gave Slippery Rock head coach
Taryn Burkholder her 100th career win as a collegiate head coach while improving her to 60-21 in her fifth season at SRU.
Â
The Rock improve to 7-0 overall and move to 2-0 in the all-time series against Newberry. The Wolves dropped to 5-5 overall with the loss.
Â
Newberry opened the scoring with a goal in the fourth minute, but that would be the only lead of the day for the hosts.
Reagan Richeson leveled the score at 1-1 less than two minutes later and The Rock took the lead with Richeson's second of the game with 6:44 to play in the first.
Â
The Wolves tied the game at 3-3 midway through the second period, but SRU closed the first half with goals from
Isabella Buono and
Cadyn Eismann to take a 5-3 lead into the break.
Â
Newberry chipped away at the advantage and cut it to a one goal game at 6-5 with 2:52 to play in the third, but Slippery Rock slammed the door from there. The Rock reeled off four straight goals and closed the game on a 5-1 run to pull away for the 11-6 win.
Â
SRU limited its fifth straight opponent to six goals or fewer and held its opponent to single-digit scoring for the sixth time in seven outings this year. The Rock finished with advantages of 42-14 in shots, 26-8 in shots on goal, 13-7 in draw controls and 21-15 in ground balls.
Â
Richeson paced the attack with four goals and one assist for five points.
Maddie Blazey added one goal and two assists and Eismann and Buono each scored two goals.
Ella Koslowski notched one goal and one assist and
Ava Dossier capped the scoring with one goal.
Â
Shannon Von Kaenel pulled down a game-high eight draw controls and
Paige Jenkins led the defense with six caused turnovers and two ground balls to go along with three draw controls.
Violet Freebody added three caused turnovers and two ground balls and
Caitlyn Kelly and
Lily Ventresca each caused two turnovers.
Â
Ventresca earned the win in goal to improve to 6-0 on the year. She was credited with just two saves, but impacted the game much more than that number suggests. She also grabbed four ground balls and lowered her goals against average to just 6.53 on the year.
Â
Ella Todd led Newberry with one goal and three assists while goalie Presley Green kept her team in the game with 15 saves.
Â
Slippery Rock will now shift its focus to defending the PSAC Western Division title. The Rock are set to return home from South Carolina Thursday and will open PSAC divisional play Saturday with a home game at noon against Gannon.
