ORLANDO, Fla. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team earned an early-season Atlantic Region victory with a 7-0 shutout of West Chester University Friday at the Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando, Florida.
Â
The victory improves The Rock's record to 2-0 in 2025-26, while West Chester drops to 4-3 following the loss. Friday's match served as the first of five contests for SRU in the state of Florida as part of its annual spring break trip.
Â
Slippery Rock set the tone for the match early on with a near perfect sweep of the doubles flights.
Â
The contest started with the 34th ranked doubles team in the nation –
Nicole Kempton and
Alissia Kivi – earning a 6-0 sweep of Alexandra Cave and Delaney Tingle in the top flight followed by a 6-1 triumph by
Amaia Balaguer Brau and
Tina Slovak over Ashleigh Grooms and Brigitte Gravelle in the second flight to give SRU the opening team point of the day.
Â
While The Rock was already assured of the doubles point, their third-flight pairing of
Nadia Rodewald and
Dari Sakhanova also captured a 6-0 win against Felicia Manful and Sohana Thompson.
Â
Two of Slippery Rock's three doubles teams - Kempton / Kivi (10-7) and Rodewald / Sakhanova (10-1) – earned their 10th wins of the year, while Slovak and Balaguer Brau are a near perfect 6-1.
Â
The singles portion of the match began in similar fashion to the doubles bouts as Kivi quickly grabbed a 6-1, 6-0 second flight win from Grooms to up her overall record in 2025-26 to 11-1.
Â
Rodewald continued to push SRU towards a team victory by downing Thompson 6-1, 6-0 from the sixth flight. The win evened Rodewald's singles record at 5-5.
Â
Slippery Rock officially clinched its second team win of the season via Balaguer Brau's 6-3, 6-2 victory against Tingle out of the top flight. Balaguer Brau's two wins Friday give her 97 at The Rock, three shy of becoming the 17th athlete in program history to hit 100 wins.
Â
With the team victory clinched, Slippery Rock finished off the shutout with three more victories out of the third, fourth and fifth flights.
Â
Kempton bested Gravelle (6-3, 6-1) in third flight action, Slovak bettered Cave (6-0, 6-2) in the fourth slot and Sakhanova defeated Manful in the fifth flight (6-2, 6-0).
Â
Like Balaguer Brau, Kempton is also closing in on 100 career wins as her victories against West Chester pushed her season record to 9-2 and upped her career win total to 96. Already members of The Rock's 100-win club, Sakhanova (7-3) and Slovak (3-1) are both off to great starts in 2025-26 as well.
