Rock outlasts Texas A&M Kingsville, 4-3

The Slippery Rock women’s team improved its record to 3-0 in 2026 after earning a solid 4-3 victory over Texas A&M Kingsville Tuesday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Slippery Rock University women's team earned a solid 4-3 non-conference victory over Texas A&M Kingsville Tuesday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.

The Rock's latest victory improves their perfect record to 3-0 in 2026, while Texas A&M Kingsville falls to 4-5 following the loss. Slippery Rock earned the win by capturing the doubles point followed by a trio of trusted veterans all compiling singles wins.

Tuesday's match opened with The Rock earning the doubles point thanks to wins out of the second and third flights.

The Rock's Amaia Balaguer Brau and Tina Slovak logged the first result of the match in the form of a 6-1 triumph over Annika Andersson Gomez and Kaitlin Blount from the second flight, improving their record to 8-1 and stretching their winning streak to eight matches.

Nadia Rodewald and Dari Sakhanova then locked up the team point for SRU via a 6-2 third-flight win against Andrea Landaeta and Emma Halvarsson. In their first year as partners, Rodewald and Sakhanova are off to an 11-3 start this season.

While it had no effect on the team score, Texas A&M Kingsville was able to avoid the doubles sweep as Maya Donkor and Guadalupe Tocci narrowly edged The Rock's top flight team of Nicole Kempton and Alissia Kivi, 7-6.

The singles portion of Tuesday's match was a back-and-forth affair with close matches at nearly every flight.

Gomez briefly brought the Javelinas even with The Rock as she took a 6-2, 6-4 decision from Slovak in the fourth flight only for Sakhanova to give SRU its second point of the day via a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Blount out of the fifth flight. Sakhanova is now 8-3 on the year and on a three-match winning streak.

Slippery Rock went on to close out the hard-fought match thanks to Balaguer Brau and Kempton registering back-to-back tiebreaker wins. Balaguer Brau bested Tocci in the first flight (6-4, 2-6, 11-9) and Kempton rallied to beat Landeaeta in the third flight (2-6, 6-0, 10-7).

In addition to clinching The Rock's third team victory of the year, the singles wins by Balaguer Brau and Kempton further closed the two in on history. Balaguer Brau is now just one victory shy of becoming the 17th athlete in program history to record 100 career wins. Kempton meanwhile is also approaching her 100th win at SRU as she currently has 97 victories through the early stages of her junior year.

Inside this season, Kempton and Balaguer Brau have both won three straight singles matches to improve their respective records to 10-2 and 10-3.

With SRU's victory already secured, the day ended by Texas A&M Kingsville earning two tight wins in the second and sixth flights. Donkor defeated Kivi (7-5, 7-6 (7-4)) and Halvarsson edged Rodewald (1-6, 6-4, 11-9).

Slippery Rock continues its spring break trip 3 p.m. Wednesday in a true away match at Saint Leo University.
