No. 7 Rock cruises past Wheeling, 22-3

No. 7 Slippery Rock jumped out to a 10-0 lead and cruised to a 22-3 win over Wheeling Wednesday to improve to 5-0 on the year.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The seventh ranked Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team stayed unbeaten on the year with a comfortable 22-3 win over Wheeling University Wednesday in a non-conference game from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
The Rock improve to 5-0 on the season and 5-0 all-time against Wheeling. The Cardinals drop to 2-4 on the season.
 
Slippery Rock outshot Wheeling 12-1 in the first quarter and jumped out to a 10-0 lead before cruising to the comfortable victory. It marked the second lopsided win in a row for SRU after posting a 19-4 win at D'Youville last Saturday. In both of those games, SRU fired more than 40 shots and limited their opponents to just 10 shots.
 
The Rock finished the game Wednesday with a 41-10 advantage in total shots and have now outshot their last two opponents 88-20 while outscoring them 41-7. SRU was dominant in all phases Wednesday and put up advantages of 36-8 in shots on goal, 20-8 in draw controls and 25-15 in ground balls. The hosts were nearly perfect on the clear, going 11-of-12, while limiting Wheeling to 10-of-19 and causing 17 of 23 total turnovers by the Cardinals.
 
Slippery Rock got points from 11 different players and at least two points from nine different players. Reagan Richeson led the way with a career-high seven points on five goals and two assists. She also caused two turnovers and has seven caused turnovers on the ride in the last two games. Abby Fink netted a hat trick and added two assists to finish with five points and Isabella Buono scored a season-high four goals.
 
Maddie Blazey scored one goal and handed out three assists, Claire Petty netted one goal and handed out two assists and Ava Dossier scored two goals and assisted one to give SRU six different players with at least three points. Caitlyn Kelly and Lauren Petty each scored two goals and Shannon Von Kaenel scored one goal and handed out one assist to go along with a game-high nine draw controls.
 
The point scorers were capped by Erin Melcher with one goal and Grace Rotter with one assist. Rotter and Violet Freebody led the team with three caused turnovers each with Freebody leading the squad with four ground balls. Richeson and Paige Jenkins each had two caused turnovers and Jenkins grabbed six draw controls and three ground balls.
 
Lily Ventresca picked up the easy win in goal after allowing just one goal and recording two saves in the first half. Ava Drath played the second half and finished with three saves and two goals allowed. In total, The Rock's goalies made five saves and allowed just three goals in a split effort.
 
Wheeling, which had a two-game winning streak snapped, was led by Jovie Noack with two goals and one assist. Starting goalie Giavonna Perkins kept her team in the game early and finished with 10 saves in the first half.
 
Slippery Rock will fly to South Carolina Thursday to open a spring break trip that will include two key regional games, first with a trip to Lander Saturday for a 4 p.m. game followed by a visit to Newberry next Wednesday. Lander earned an overtime win against SRU last spring, which was the only regular season loss for The Rock.
