Rock downed at No. 8 Gannon

The Slippery Rock women’s basketball team was downed at No. 8 Gannon, 66-31, in PSAC West action Wednesday night at the Highmark Events Center.

ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team was downed at No. 8 Gannon University, 66-31, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action Wednesday night at the Highmark Events Center.

With the loss, Slippery Rock fell to 7-16 overall and 5-12 in PSAC play, while Gannon's record improved to 23-3 overall and 15-2 in the PSAC.

The Rock, California (Pa.) and Clarion all suffered losses Wednesday, keeping SRU two games back sixth place in the PSAC West standings with three games to play in the regular season. The top six teams in the PSAC West's regular season standings make the PSAC Tournament. 

Kayley Joseph-Bernard led SRU with eight points and six rebounds. Iyanna Wade finished the game with five points and three assists. Claudia Ierullo also scored five points for Slippery Rock to go along with two rebounds.

Defensively, Joseph-Bernard, Sophia Hook and Sarah Chawki had one steal apiece for SRU.

Gannon ended the first quarter with a 15-3 advantage and was able to extend its lead to 19 points at halftime (37-18). In the second half, the Golden Knights added 16 points to their lead to close out a 35-point victory over The Rock.

Slippery Rock ended the game shooting 19.1 percent (9-of-47) from the field overall, 20 percent (3-for-15) from the 3-point line and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the charity stripe. 

Gannon finished the game shooting 47.3 percent (26-of-55) from the floor overall, 21.1 percent (4-for-19) from beyond the arc and 76.9 percent (10-of-13) from the foul line. 

Slippery Rock returns home to host Seton Hill University for its penultimate home game of the regular season 1 p.m. Saturday at Morrow Field House. Earlier this season, Seton Hill took down The Rock 96-75 at the Mckenna Center. Saturday's game will be Slippery Rock's Senior Day as well as SRU's annual Cancer Awareness Game.
