Rock drops decision to Seton Hill

The Slippery Rock women’s basketball team lost a home PSAC West game to Seton Hill, 98-71, on Senior Day Saturday at Morrow Field House.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team lost a home Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division game to Seton Hill University, 98-71, on Senior Day Saturday at Morrow Field House.

Slippery Rock exits the day with a 7-17 overall record and a 5-13 mark inside the PSAC, while the visiting Griffins improved to 17-7 overall and 13-5 in league games.

With two games remaining in the regular season SRU finds itself eighth in the Western Division standings, two games behind Clarion and California, who are tied for fifth in the league, and one game in back of seventh-place Pitt-Johnstown (6-12).

The top six teams in the Western Division standings at the end of the season qualify for the PSAC Tournament. While not mathematically eliminated, Slippery Rock now must win each of its final two games of the regular season and receive help in the form of losses from Clarion, California and UPJ to have any hope of earning a PSAC Tournament berth.

SRU's 2025-26 senior class of Laney Bone, Alyssa Gillin, Kayley Joseph-Bernard, Deryn Moye and Karianna Woods were recognized for their contributions to the program over their careers pregame ceremony.

The Rock offensive efforts Saturday was spearheaded by the backcourt duo of Woods and Iyanna Wade. Wade went for 17 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals. Woods added 12 points on an efficient 5-of-7 shooting from the field to go with one steal and one assist.

Wade's five assists pushed her season total to 106. She is just the second freshman in program history to register 100 or more assists in their rookie season: Alisa Dibonaventura had 174 in 1997-98.

As she has done so many times through the duration of her Rock career, Joseph-Bernard did a little bit of everything for SRU on the way to finishing with nine points, 10 rebounds, six assists and five steals.

Joseph-Bernard was joined in the frontcourt of Saturday's starting lineup by fellow seniors Bone and Gillin.

In what was her first start at SRU, Bone provided The Rock with nine points and two rebounds over a season-high 20 minutes. Gillin just missed out on a double-double as part of an eight-point, seven-rebound, two-block, two-assist, one-steal showing.

Gillin's two blocks moved her into a tie with Shelbey Wardman (1998-02) for fourth place on SRU's career blocks ledger (66). Her 41 blocks this year are the third highest single-season total all-time at SRU, one rejection behind second place Tracy Whitling's 42 blocks in 2000-01.

Off the bench, Mairan Haggerty scored six points. Claudia Ierullo and Sophia Hook chipped in four points apiece, with Hook coming up with two steals.

Slippery Rock compiled its second-best shooting percentage of the year Saturday, making 29-of-60 attempts (.483). Defensively, SRU garnered 12 steals which is its second-highest total in a game this year as well.

However, Seton Hill shot 52.2 percent (36-of-69) from the floor overall, 44.8 percent (13-of-29) from 3-point range and 72.2 percent (13-of-18) at the foul line while holding a +12 (41-29) rebounding margin. Helene Cowan (21) and Hallie Cowan combined for 41 points.

Defensively, the Griffins limited SRU to a 5-of-22 effort from 3-point range in addition to forcing The Rock into a near season-high 25 miscues which resulted in 41 points off turnovers.

Slippery Rock and Seton Hill traded the lead back-and-forth four times in an up-and-down, evenly matched first quarter that saw SHU end the period with a slim 27-25 edge.

SRU was unable to recapture the momentum of the first quarter as Seton Hill built its lead out to as many as 13 points in the second quarter before taking a 12-point, 53-41, advantage into the halftime break.

The Griffins went on to close out the win by adding 10 points to its halftime lead at the conclusion of the third quarter and five more on top of that through the final 10 minutes for the eventual 27-point win. SHU converted 7-of-12 3-point attempts in the second half while making 16-of-31 (.516) field attempts overall in the final 20 minutes.

Slippery Rock returns home for the final time this season when it hosts Edinboro 5:30 p.m. Feb. 25 at Morrow Field House in a must-win PSAC West game. The Feb. 26 contest will also serve as SRU's Bobby McGraw Memorial Game, Employee Appreciation Game and Black History Month Game.
