SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team's second half comeback fell short in a, 2-1, loss against No. 24 Gannon University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play Wednesday at James Egli Field.
With the result, Slippery Rock drops to 2-5-4 overall with a 0-3-1 mark in the PSAC West, while Gannon's overall record improved to 8-1-2 and 4-0-0 in the division.
Aashi Pandher scored his first goal of the season off
Tom Roantree's first assists of the season and
Kaden Reynolds' fourth helper of the campaign.
Pandher led both sides with four shots and two on goal, as Reynolds (2) was the only other Rock player to take multiple shots.
Dylan Greggs,
Zsombor Retfalvi, and
Fynn Uebele rounded out Slippery Rock's shot takers with one apiece.
Troy Nine made six saves in goal, hist most stops in the last four games for SRU.
Gannon opened the scoring in the seventh minute off an impressive passing sequence, which ended with Per Kristian Lauvstad scoring off assists from Carter Sindlinger and Rafa Hyde.
The Golden Knights extended their advantage in the 35
th minute on Mathias Asphjell's long-range goal from outside the box, making it 2-0 Gannon.
After halftime, Slippery Rock cut its deficit in half on Pandher's marker in the 54
th minute. Reynolds started the play on the left wing and sent in a cross to Roantree, who's touch found Pandher at the top of the box, leading to Pandher's strike into the top left corner.
The Rock spent the final 36 minutes looking for an equalizer and took three more shots, but was unable to find a second goal as Gannon closed out the game, 2-1.
Slippery Rock ended the game with an advantages in saves (6-1), while Gannon ended the contest on top in shots (14-9) and corner kicks (5-2).
Slippery Rock returns to action and closes out the first cycle of round robin play in the PSAC West against Pitt-Johnstown noon Saturday at the Pitt-Johnstown Soccer Field.
