Rock claims road victory against Pitt-Johnstown, 3-1

The Slippery Rock men’s soccer team earned its first PSAC West win of the season on the road against Pitt-Johnstown, 3-1, Saturday at the Pitt-Johnstown Soccer Field.

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team earned its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division win of the season on the road against Pitt-Johnstown, 3-1, Saturday at the Pitt-Johnstown Soccer Field.

With the result, Slippery Rock improved to 3-5-4 overall with a 1-3-1 mark inside the PSAC West, while Pitt-Johnstown's overall record dropped to 1-8-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the division.

Zsombor Retfalvi, Caleb Alldredge and Massimo Cuda each scored one goal for The Rock. Retfalvi and Cuda each scored their first goals of the season, while Alldredge grabbed his second, as well as the game-winner. Boele Zwartele and Christopher Merrill earned one assist each for The Rock.

Tom Roantree led all players in shots with six and shots on goal with three. Zwartele (3), Cuda (2) and Kaden Reynolds (2) also took multiple shots for SRU. Retfalvi, Alldredge, Gabin Lonjard, Gerard Lopez Marti and Aashi Pandher rounded out Slippery Rock's shot takers with one apiece.

Troy Nine claimed his third win of the season in goal for The Rock, making one save and allowing one goal on three shots faced.

Slippery Rock took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute, when Retfalvi jumped on the loose ball on the six-yard box and finding the bottom right corner off the fingertips of Pitt-Johnstown's goalkeeper George Pasko.

The Rock doubled its advantage in the 34th minute as Zwartele and Alldredge completed a give-and-go on the right wing that led to Alldredge finding the back of the net, giving SRU a 2-0 lead.

Just five minutes later, Slippery Rock scored a third off the foot of Cuda. Merrill brought the ball down the right wing and sent in a cross along the ground into the six-yard box, before Cuda crashed the net and gave Slippery Rock a 3-0 lead.

Pitt-Johnstown's Jimmy Quinn scored a late goal in the 88th minute to make the score, 3-1, off an assist from Gabriel Diaz.

Slippery Rock closed out the final two minutes and claimed a 3-1 victory.

The Rock ended the game with advantages in shots (18-3), shots on goal (10-2) and corner kicks (7-3).

Slippery Rock will be back in action against Lock Haven 6:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at Hubert Jack Stadium. Earlier this season, Slippery Rock and Lock Haven tied, 2-2, in PSAC West play at James Egli Field.
