COACHING MATCHUP
Slippery Rock head coach Shawn Lutz is in his 31st overall year at The Rock and his 11th year (10th season) as head coach, where he owns a 95-25 record with 10 straight winning seasons, five PSAC West titles and six trips to the NCAA playoffs. Lutz was the PSAC West Coach of the Year in 2018, 2019 and 2023 and was the Don Hansen Football Gazette Division II National Coach of the Year in 2019. The 95 wins are the most among all PSAC West head coaches since the 2016 season. Lutz was an assistant at SRU for 20 years before taking over the program in 2016. He has been a member of the coaching staff for 13 of SRU's 20 PSAC West titles. Lutz played tight end at West Virginia University, graduating in 1996, and earned a master's degree from SRU in 2003.

Joe Battaglia is in his second season as head coach at Lock Haven, where he owns a 10-8 overall record. Battaglia led the Bald Eagles to their first winning season in 44 years with a 6-5 record last fall and has LHU in second place in the PSAC West this year, just one game behind SRU. Battaglia joined the staff at LHU as offensive coordinator in 2022 before taking over in 2025. Prior to that, he worked at Georgia Tech, Temple and Coastal Carolina as an offensive assistant.

NATIONAL RANKINGS
Slippery Rock held steady at No. 7 in the AFCA Division II national poll and No. 8 in the D2football.com poll this week. Both national polls are available on page nine of the PDF notes linked above. The Rock were also ranked No. 1 in the NCAA NPI computer rankings this week. More info on the NPI Rankings HERE.

NO. 1 IN FIRST NCAA NPI RANKINGS
The new NCAA Power Index (NPI) debuted this week in Division II. The NPI will be used to determine the national tournament fields moving forward, replacing the ranking committees. The NPI assigns a point value to each game and rewards teams for their winning percentage and strength of schedule. Slippery Rock was ranked No. 1 among all programs in Division II this week and with that also ranked No. 1 in Super Region One.

NATIONAL NPI RANKINGS
Slippery Rock currently ranks No. 1 among all teams in the country with an NPI number of 66.161. Harding is No. 2 at 65.624, followed by Northwood (63.760), Colorado State Pueblo (63.751) and Ferris State (63.531) rounding out the top five. There are nine total teams with an NPI above 60, including Emporia State (62.666), Minnesota State (61.783), Kutztown (61.746) and Northwest Missouri State (60.103), while Davenport (59.733) rounds out the top 10.

SUPER REGION ONE RANKINGS
Slippery Rock leads Super Region One this week, followed by Kutztown, East Stroudsburg, Virginia State and West Liberty rounding out the top five. Indiana (Pa.) is sixth in the region, followed by Virginia Union, Johnson C. Smith, Franklin Pierce and Assumption rounding out the top 10.

10 UNBEATENS LEFT
Slippery Rock enters this weekend as one of just 10 teams in Division II that is still unbeaten on the year. The other undefeated teams are Colorado State Pueblo, Davenport, Emporia State, Ferris State, Harding, Kutztown, Minnesota State, Northwood and Western Colorado.

7-0 TO START THE YEAR
Slippery Rock is 7-0 for the first time since the 2023 season and is looking for its third 8-0 start in the last six seasons and just its fifth 8-0 start in program history. The Rock won their first 10 games of the 2023 season and their first 13 games in 2019 to set the program's single-season winning streak record. Prior to that, SRU hadn't reached 8-0 to open a season since finishing the 1939 season with an 8-0 record and the 1924 season with a 9-0 mark.

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE
Rock football teams have compiled a 202-71 (.740) record in 51+ seasons at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium (formerly known as N. Kerr Thompson Stadium). The Rock own a 102-26 (.797) home record since artificial turf was installed in the summer of 2003 and are 98-20 (.831) in home games since 2005. The numbers get even better in recent years, as The Rock are 80-11 (.879) at home since the beginning of the 2010 season and 68-8 (.895) since the beginning of the 2013 season. SRU is 50-8 (.862) at home under Shawn Lutz and has never lost more than one home game in a season under Lutz.

HOMECOMING HISTORY  |  All-Time Homecoming Results
Slippery Rock's first official Homecoming game took place Oct. 13, 1934 against Grove City. The Rock are 59-26-4 in their 89 Homecoming games all-time. SRU has won its last four Homecoming games and is 6-1 in the last seven and 18-4 in the last 22 Homecoming games.

HOMECOMING GAMES AGAINST LOCK HAVEN
Lock Haven will be the Homecoming opponent for just the fifth time. SRU is 4-1 in those previous five meetings. Lock Haven won the first Homecoming meeting between the teams in 1942. Since then, SRU has won four straight against LHU in 1989, 1991, 2006 and 2010.

WELCOME BACK TO THE WEST
This game marks the first divisional game for SRU against Lock Haven since 2012. The teams met at least once each season for every year from 1962-2012 before LHU moved from the West Division to the East Division when the league expanded. With the future addition of Lackawanna to the East Division, Lock Haven was moved back to the West Division this year.

ALREADY LOCKED UP A WINNING SEASON
Slippery Rock is already guaranteed to finish with a winning season this fall, extending its current streak of winning seasons to 17 straight years.  The Rock entered this year ranked ninth among all Division II programs for the longest active winning seasons streak in the country. The only other program in the PSAC with more consecutive winning seasons currently is California (Pa.), which has strung together 21 winning seasons entering 2026.

PSAC WEST TITLE IN REACH
Slippery Rock can lock up at least a share of the PSAC West title with a win this week and can lock up the division's spot in the PSAC title game with a win this week AND a Seton Hill win over Clarion. A loss by SRU this week would put Lock Haven in the driver's seat and keep four teams within a game of the top spot in the division. If SRU wins this week AND Clarion beats Seton Hill this week, the division's title game spot will not be decided until at least next week.

LUTZ UP TO 12TH ON PSAC WINS LIST
SRU head coach Shawn Lutz won his 95th game at The Rock last week, which is No. 12 on the all-time PSAC head football coaching wins ledger. Lutz is two wins shy of moving up to No. 11 and seven wins shy of cracking the PSAC all-time top 10 wins list, which includes just 10 other men to ever record 100 wins in the conference.

BACK IN THE TOP 10
Slippery Rock is ranked inside the top 10 for the seventh straight year and the 10th time in the last 11 seasons.

STREAKING IN THE POLLS
Slippery Rock has been ranked or at least receiving votes in every AFCA national poll released since Oct. 8, 2018, a streak of more than 2,930 straight days.

ROCK DUO WITH TWO RUSH TD IN SAME GAME
JayJay Jordan and DaOne Owens both ran for two TD last week to become the first Rock duo to rush for two touchdowns each in the same game since Chris D'Or and Isaiah Edwards each ran for two TD against Mercyhurst on Oct. 7, 2023.

FIRST PICK SIX OF THE SEASON
Owen Suah's 40-yard pick six in the fourth quarter at IUP last week marked the first SRU interception return for a TD this season and the first since Michael Henwood returned one 53 yards against Clarion Nov. 1, 2025.

CAREER-HIGHS ON THE DEFENSE
Slippery Rock had a trio of defensive players record career-highs for tackles last week at IUP, including Owen Suah, Jacob Snow and Brett Kwoka, who combined for a dominant effort all day. Suah and Snow both had 10 total tackles, while Kwoka had nine to give the trio 29 combined tackles. Slippery Rock enters this week as the only 50+ point per game offense at the NCAA Division I or II level, including all teams in the FBS, FCS and Division II. The only NCAA teams from any level currently scoring more points per game than SRU are two Division III teams: Lake Forest (62.4 ppg) and Washington U (53.3 ppg). There are only five total NCAA football teams across all four levels that average more than 50 points per game entering this week with SRU being joined by four Division III schools (Saint John's at 51.7 ppg and Bethel at 51.3 ppg).

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES
Slippery Rock has scored 365 points through seven games this year after scoring just 327 total points in 10 games last season.

ONLY THREE TURNOVERS
Slippery Rock lost its first fumble of the season last week at IUP but still leads all programs in Division II with only three total turnovers on the year. The Rock have played five games without a single turnover and have turned it over in only two games. SRU currently ranks No. 1 nationally in fewest turnovers (3) and No. 6 in turnover margin (+1.43 per game).

His 18 rushing TD in seven games already ranks No. 5 in SRU single-season history, three off LaMonte Coleman's record of 21 from 1994. His 20 total TD in seven games is already No. 3 in program history, one away from tying Coleman and Henry Litwin (2019) for the SRU single-season record. Owens is completing 67.4 percent of his passes for 1,587 yards with 17 TD and two INT. He has also rushed for 437 yards and five touchdowns and is averaging 9.3 yards per carry and 62.4 rushing yards per game on the ground. Owens has at least one run of 34+ yards in four of the last five games and has runs of 50+ yards in three different games this year.

THREE-HEADED MONSTER
Slippery Rock has three players averaging at least 8.4 yards per carry on the ground. Luke McCoy has just 19 carries on the year, but has made them count in limited action when spelling JayJay Jordan. McCoy has 225 yards and four TD, averaging 11.8 yards per carry. Jordan averages 8.4 yards per carry and QB DaOne Owens is averaging 9.3 yards per carry. Those three have combined for 1,635 rushing yards and 27 TD while averaging 9.0 yards per carry on 182 carries combined.

SINGLE-GAME STREAKS
John Sabo has now caught at least one pass in 16 straight games. JayJay Jordan has at least one touchdown in 13 straight games.

TWO SACKS ALLOWED IN SEVEN GAMES
SRU ranks second nationally in fewest sacks allowed per game (0.29) after allowing just two sacks through seven games and only one sack with the starters on the field. The Rock also rank eighth nationally in fewest tackles for loss allowed per game at 3.43.

NOT BAD FOR AN O-LINE WITH LIMITED EXPERIENCE
Slippery Rock rolled out an entirely new starting offensive line in the opener and that unit has allowed just two total sacks through seven games. The combined total of starts at SRU for all five players on the line was just three and all three of those belonged to center Mohamed Aly, who has since missed six straight weeks with an injury. Right tackle Jake Jonassen, right guard Christian Werling, left guard Brian Frasco and left tackle Varrius Farrell all made their first start at SRU in the opener and center Soren Stoltzfus made his first start at ESU in week two. Left guard Mike Crist made his first career start last week at IUP as Frasco missed his first game of the year. That unit continues to improve weekly and has powered an SRU offense that ranks in the top 20 nationally in nearly every offensive category.

TACKLES SPREAD OUT ACROSS DEFENSE
Slippery Rock has not relied on one standout defensive player this year and is getting contributions up and down the defense. The Rock have 17 different players with double digit tackles on the year and 13 players between 22 and 40 total stops on the year. Teddy Gregory Jr. leads the group with 40 tackles and 3.0 TFL. Jacob Snow (37 tackles, 3.0 TFL), Ben Lane (33 tackles, 1.0 TFL) and Brian Young Jr. (30 tackles, 4.0 TFL, 2.5 sacks) all have at least 30 tackles on the year, while Brett Kwoka (28 tackles, 5.0 TFL, 2.5 sacks), Carmen Metcalfe (27 tackles), Daniel Tooson (25 tackles, 1.5 TFL, 1.0 sack), Tyree Johnson (25 tackles, 1.5 TFL) and Evan Harper (25 tackles, 1.0 TFL) all have 25+ tackles.
