No. 7 Rock falls to No. 2 Warriors, 4-2

The No. 7 Slippery Rock field hockey team lost to No. 2 East Stroudsburg, 4-2, Saturday in PSAC competition at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The No. 7 Slippery Rock University field hockey team lost to No. 2 East Stroudsburg University, 4-2, Saturday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competition at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

Saturday's result moves Slippery Rock's record to 9-3 overall and 1-3 inside the PSAC while the Warriors improve to 12-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

The Rock played even with the Warriors for much of the day as ESU ended the game with narrow edges in total shots (13-10) and shots on goal (10-7). SRU edged its counterparts in penalty corners (5-4).

Individually, Slippery Rock was led by goal scorers Lucy Hutchinson and Keila Schutte-Hanekom.

Hutchinson has now compiled 13 goals in 2026, the third highest total in SRU single-season history. Her 30 total points are also tied for the third most in program single-season history.

Schutte-Hanekom's goal was the second of the freshman's young career.

Hutchinson accounted for four of The Rock's seven shots on goal. Schutte-Hanekom, Hilary Hoffman and Riley Cloude all had one attempt on target apiece as well.

The Rock and Warriors traded first quarter strikes with Emily Dobrowolski getting East Stroudsburg on the board first via a goal at 2:20, only for Hutchinson to pull SRU into a 1-1 tie with a quality goal of her own in the 13th minute.

However, the difference in the game came in the second quarter when Rylie McGrath scored a pair of goals 84 seconds a part to send the Warriors into halftime ahead 3-1.

Following a scoreless third quarter that saw Rock goalkeeper Sam Black and her counterpart Jet Vermeulen stifle the offenses, SRU and ESU traded goals in the final 15 minutes as Lisa Pasman stretched the Warriors' lead to three goals at 53:10 before Schutte-Hanekom answered just under a minute later for The Rock.

Hutchinson registered a final shot on target following the Schutte-Hanekom goal, but Vermeulen was able to make the save as ESU closed out the 4-2 road win.

Black finished the day with a game-high six saves.

Slippery Rock returns to competition when it hits the road for a 2 p.m. Oct. 21 PSAC tilt at Frostburg State University. SRU defeated the Bobcats, 6-2, in non-conference play earlier in the year.
