FROSTBURG, Pa. – The No. 8 Slippery Rock University field hockey team earned an important 3-2 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division victory Wednesday at Frostburg State University.
Â
Wednesday's win improves The Rock's record to 10-3 overall and 2-3 in PSAC competition, while the host Bobcats drop to 6-7 overall and 1-3 in league contests.
Â
With four games remaining in the regular season, Slippery Rock is positioned sixth in the PSAC standings, a half-game ahead of Frostburg State (1-3) and one game behind fifth-place Bloomsburg (3-2). The top six teams in the conference standings at the conclusion of the regular season qualifies for the PSAC Tournament. SRU's last postseason appearance came in 2017.
Â
SRU's 10 wins already ties this year's team for the most wins inside the program since 1990 – The Rock also won 10 games in 2017 – in addition to being tied for the second winningest season in program history overall alongside the 2017, 1988 and 1976 teams. The school record for wins in a season is 14 (1987).
Â
The Rock's offensive output was evenly distributed in Wednesday's win as
Grace Williams,
Lucy Hutchinson and
Coral Piramo accounted for SRU's goals with assists by
Riley Cloude and
Hilary Hoffman.
Â
Hutchinson is now up to 14 goals on the year and 32 total points. She is just seven points and three goals away from breaking Megan McKay's single-season records in both statistical categories set in 2015.
Â
Piramo and Williams continued their career-years as well via their eighth and sixth goals of 2026, respectively. Piramo has converted four game-winning goals.
Â
Hoffman has accumulated a team-best five assists this season and 13 over her four-year career. She is three assists away from breaking McKay's career assists record of 15 (2013-16).
Â
Rounding out Slippery Rock's point scorers in the win was Cloude with her career-high fourth assist.
Â
As has been the case for much of the season, Slippery Rock's high-powered offense, which entered the day ranked fifth in the nation in goals per game, overwhelmed the opposition with 26 total shots and 20 on target attempts.
Â
Hutchinson accounted for nine shots on goal followed by Hoffman (4), Cloude (2), Williams (1), Piramo (1),
Josie Shultz (1),
Delaney Evans (1) and
Keila Schutte-Hanekom (1).
Â
Defensively, goalkeeper
Sam Black made two saves to anchor a defense that limited FSU to just six total shots over four quarters.
Â
The 2026 team has now set team single-season school records in goals (44), assists (29) and total points (117). Defensively, Slippery Rock enters the waning weeks of the regular season having allowed a mere 21 goals. Since 2003, SRU has finished the year with under 30 goals surrendered just two times (2014, 2012). Â
Â
In what was a back-and-forth opening half, The Rock and Bobcats traded early goals as Williams put SRU up early on a Cloude assist 4:35 into the first quarter before FSU pulled even just under three minutes later via a Zoey Gibbons score.
Â
In similar fashion to the opening quarter, Slippery Rock and Frostburg State again tallied early scores in the second quarter. Hutchinson finished a Hoffman pass 25 seconds into the period before the Bobcats again put the game into a tie on Caroline Earnshaw's goal at 16:15. The game entered the halftime break in a 2-2 stalemate.
Â
The difference in the contest came in the 49th minute when Piramo beat FSU goalkeeper - and reigning National Field Hockey Coaches Association Defensive Player of the Week -Jenna Yazzetti for the go-ahead goal at 48:15 on an unassisted strike.
Â
The Rock's defense secured the win down the stretch by not allowing another Frostburg attempt and clearing FSU's lone penalty corner of the quarter following Piramo's goal en route to the 3-2 victory.
Â
Slippery Rock ended the game holding advantages over Frostburg State in total shots (26-6), shots on goal (20-4) and penalty corners (9-4). Wednesday's game marked The Rock's first on the road at Frostburg State since 2021.
