SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – A three-point day from
Marissa Salisbury propelled the Slippery Rock University women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Edinboro to open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play Saturday at James Egli Field.
After the win, Slippery Rock is now 1-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the PSAC West. The Rock are now 7-2-1 in their last 10 PSAC West conference openers. The Fighting Scots fall to 2-2-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the PSAC West after the loss.
The Rock saw three different goal-scorers on the day and five different players collect at least a point, including a multi-point game from Salisbury.
Abby Paterline,
Sophia Palermo and Salisbury each collected a goal, while
Bailey McGee,
Irene Doleno and Salisbury tallied assists for SRU. Salisbury earned her first collegiate goal and assist, while Doleno grabbed her first career assist in the victory over Edinboro.
Leah Allman earned her first win of the season and the 22
nd of her career after collecting two saves in the win.
Slippery Rock opened the scoring early with an 11
th minute goal from Salisbury. McGee controlled the ball through the midfield and found a path in the defense with a through ball, Salisbury took the pass and beat the Edinboro goalkeeper to make it 1-0 SRU.
The Rock would take a 1-0 lead into halftime. SRU held a 10-5 lead in shots and 3-1 edge in shots on goal.
Looking for an equalizer, Edinboro would find one via Jada Cole in the 59
th minute. An errant pass from Slippery Rock saw the ball fall right to Grace Madison, who sent Cole past the defense where she beat Allman in a one-on-one situation to tie the game up at one.
Just eight minutes later, Palermo would notch her fourth career goal against the Fighting Scots off of a set piece. Salisbury sent the corner in and Doleno headed a pass right to Palermo, who put the ball in the top right corner and gave The Rock a 2-1 lead.
With Edinboro looking for another equalizer, SRU would counter attack and Paterline burieed her own rebound to seal The Rock's 3-1 victory.
Slippery Rock finished with a 23-7 advantage in shots and 11-3 edge in shots on goal. The Rock held a 9-1 tilt in corner kicks.
Slippery Rock will hit the road to face PSAC West foe California (Pa.) 1 p.m. Saturday.
