SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Ruthie Hughes won the 10,000-meter title Thursday night to lead the Slippery Rock University women's track & field team on day one of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships from The Rock's William Lennox Track.
Â
Hughes claimed her first career individual PSAC title when she made a decisive move with a mile to go and ran away from the field to win the 10,000-meter final in 37:54.08 on her home track. She was joined in the race by a courageous
Carissa Flynn, who had her shoe stepped on just two miles into the race, leaving her to run more than half the race with only one shoe.
Â
Â
East Stroudsburg and Millersville both used strong showings in the hammer throw earlier in the day to jump out to a tie for first place in the team standings with 18 points each. Defending champion Shippensburg is third with 14 points, followed by The Rock in fourth with 10 points. Bloomsburg rounds out the top five with five points.
Â
The hammer and 10K were the only finals contested Thursday, leaving 19 event finals still to come over the next two days.
Becca Martin led SRU in the hammer with a 13th place showing and a throw of 41.92 meters. The only other events Thursday were the opening four events of the heptathlon, where
Maddy Miller led an SRU foursome with 2,621 points to sit ninth heading into the final three events Friday.
Â
Friday's second day of competition begins at 10 a.m. with day two of the multi-event competition and continues with select finals in the field and preliminary rounds on the track, culminating in the steeplechase finals Friday evening. Everything you need to know for the meet is available at the
Championship Central Page, including the meet schedule, live video broadcast schedule, live results and photo galleries.
