Rock close regular season at Edinboro

The Slippery Rock men’s basketball team concludes its regular season when it travels to Edinboro 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Slippery Rock holds a 109-99 all-time record over Edinboro in a series that began in 1912-13. However, the Fighting Scots broke a 10-game Rock winning streak at Morrow Field House earlier this season with a 74-64 victory. Before that game, the last time that The Rock lost to Edinboro was Feb. 14, 2018, in a 97-87 defeat.

Playing without two of the top-15 scorers in the PSAC, Slippery Rock fell to a well-rounded effort from Edinboro, 74-64, Jan. 29 at Morrow Field House.
 
With Jomo Goings and Maceo Austin, who combine to average 34.1 points per game, sidelined for the contest due to minor injuries, Slippery Rock saw Day Waters, Ike Herster and Luke Howes pick up the scoring in their absence. 
 
Waters finished scoring a game-high 24 points to go with four rebounds and one block. Herster and Howes went for 16 and 10 points, respectively, with Howes dishing out five assists, grabbing four boards and picking up one steal.
 
Slippery Rock closed the game shooting 39.3 percent (24-of-61) overall, but made only 1-of-9 from 3-point range for just 11.1 percent. SRU entered the contest ranked 283rd in the nation in 3-point accuracy at 28.7 percent.
 
Defensively, SRU limited the Fighting Scots to a 27-for-63 (.429) shooting performance overall that included a 9-of-27 effort from 3-point range. Daunte Wilcott led Edinboro's five double-digit scorers with 12 points.

LAST TIME OUT
Slippery Rock earned its third win in a row with an 78-71 victory over Indiana (Pa.) at the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex. Edinboro squeaked out an 73-72 victory at home against Seton Hill and tied California (Pa.) for second place in the PSAC West in the process.
 
RECORDS
• Slippery Rock heads to Edinboro with a 14-13 record overall and 10-9 in the PSAC West. The Fighting Scots enter the week at 15-10 overall and 11-7 in league games.
 
PSAC TOURNAMENT WATCH
The PSAC Tournament picture is slowly starting to take shape as nine of the 12 available tournament berths between the Western Division and Eastern Division have been clinched.
 
• SRU enters the week slotted fourth in the PSAC West standings behind Gannon (16-3), California (11-7) and Edinboro (11-7). All four teams have already locked up conference tournament spots.
 
• Slippery Rock officially earned its 14th tournament berth in the last 16 years Wednesday via its win over Clarion combined with Pitt-Johnstown's loss to California (Pa.).
 
• The final two available berths into the PSAC Tournament from the West Division will be decided between Seton Hill (7-11), IUP (7-11), Pitt-Johnstown (7-12) and Clarion (6-13).
 
• In the Eastern Division, West Chester (16-3), East Stroudsburg (14-5), Millersville (13-6), Shepherd (12-7) and Lock Haven (10-9) have secured tournament bids. The final tournament berth in the Eastern Division comes down to Shippensburg (6-13), Mansfield (5-15) and Bloomsburg (5-15).

PSAC HONORS
Following its two wins over Clarion and Indiana, Jomo Goings was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week, and Michael Moore earned PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week honors.

Over the two games, Goings averaged 19.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.0 steal over the two wins while shooting 45.8 percent (11-for-24) from the field overall, 50 percent (3-for-6) from 3-point range and 87.5 percent (14-for-16) at the foul line. Goings also had a turnover ratio of 2.25 over the two contests.

In the two victories, Moore averaged 3.0 blocks, 4.0 points and 7.0 rebounds on perfect 4-of-4 shooting from the floor.

The last time The Rock swept PSAC West Athlete of the Week and Defensive Athlete of the Week was Jan. 16, 2024 when Ike Herster and Maceo Austin earned the honors.
This was Goings' third time this season being named PSAC Athlete of the Week.
 
SCOUTING THE ROCK
• Slippery Rock goes to Edinboro ranked in the middle of the PSAC in both scoring (75.7) and points allowed (75.6).
 
• SRU's offense has been hitting their stride at the right time. In its most recent wins against Pitt-Johnstown, Clarion and Indiana, The Rock have averaged 81.7 points per game while shooting 49.7 percent (83-for-167) from the field overall, 38 percent (19-for-50) from 3-point range and 81.1 percent (60-for-74) at the foul line.
 
• The Rock ranks second in the PSAC with 4.67 blocks per game, good enough for 16th in all of Division II. SRU also ranks in the top-35 of Division II in fastbreak points (20th / 16.37), free throws made per game (20th / 17.1), steals (26th / 9.7) and forced turnovers (35th / 16.0).
 
• SRU entered its first game against Edinboro averaging 16.35 turnovers per game. However, since that loss Slippery Rock has lowered its giveaways to just 11.9 turnovers per game.
 
THE ROCK ROTATION
• Slippery Rock is led by what is arguably the best all-around guard duo the PSAC has to offer in Jomo Goings and Maceo Austin.
 
• Goings, a do-it-all guard, has put together a career-year in 2024-25 that includes per game averages of 17.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.4 steals and 0.8 blocks per game while shooting 46 percent from the field overall and 83.6 percent at the foul line.
 
• Goings, who ranks 13th in the nation in steals per game, has scored at least 18 points in six of his last seven appearances including an 18-point, 12-rebound double-double against Clarion.
 
• Much like Goings, Austin provides SRU with a little bit of everything. Through 17 starts he has provided SRU with 16.5 points on an efficient 48.6 percent from the field as well as 5.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.4 steals and 0.8 blocks.
 
• Day Waters has been on a hot streak over the last month of the season. Waters, a 12.4 points per game scorer on the year overall, has averaged 20.2 ppg in his last nine games since Jan. 18. During the impressive run Waters has made 20 of his 54 3-point attempts (.370).
 
•Ike Herster poured in 17 points against IUP, his highest output in the last five games. Herster also has nine 20-point games to his name this season while averaging 14.5 ppg for the year.
•Jomo Goings and Ike Herster have the opportunity to make their 100th career 3-pointer's with The Rock against Edinboro. Goings sits at 98 and Herster at 96 in his time with Slippery Rock.
 
• Luke Howes guides The Rock's offense. Howes, who ranks seventh in the conference in assist-turnover ratio (1.9), scores 9.7 points a game and distributes 3.3 assists. Over his last 12 appearances the point guard has had just four multi-turnover games. Defensively, Howes also grabs 1.3 steals a game.
 
• Michael Moore has been The Rock's starter inside in each of the last four games. The increase in playing time has seen Moore block 12 shots over those starts to push his season rejection total up to 27 – the eighth highest total in the PSAC.
 
• O'Meech Wilson (3.3 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 21 blocks) and Mack Staunch (2.0 ppg, 2.7 rpg) join Moore as The Rock's three true post presences.
 
• Key reserves when Slippery Rock is at full health, Sheick Samoura and Bobby Clifford combine to average 10.6 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.

SCOUTING THE FIGHTING SCOTS
• Edinboro is 15-10 on the season overall, and have been a force to be reckon with inside McComb Fieldhouse as they hold a 9-4 home record.
 
• The Fighting Scots begin the week ranked fifth in scoring defense inside the PSAC after having held opponents to just 72.4 points per game through their first 25 games of the season. Although, Edinboro allows the highest field goal percentage in the PSAC with its opponents shooting 47.6 percent from the field.
 
• Offensively, Edinboro ranks in the top half (6th) in the PSAC in scoring with 79.3 points per game. The Fighting Scots make a league-high 10.6 3-pointers per game, the only team in the PSAC in double digits.
 
•Head Coach Justin Jennings is in the midst of his second year at Edinboro and has added six new players to the roster that play significant minutes. 75.9 percent of the Fighting Scots points per game this season have come via newcomers to the roster.
 
• Cenker Evran is a matchup problem for The Rock inside. The junior forward is one of the top post players in the conference and a monster on the glass with per game averages of 14.8 points, 13.0 rebounds. 2.0 assists and 1.6 blocks per game. He shoots 69.2 percent from the field and 80.7 percent from the free throw line.
 
• Clarion transfer Steve Kelly is Edinboro's second leading scorer at 14.2 ppg. He shoots 37.8 percent (51-of-135) from 3-point range.
 
• Freshman Evan Berger has settled in nicely to the collegiate game having started 24 games as a rookie with per game averages of 10.1 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.7 steals.
 
• Daunte Wilcott scored a team-high 12 points in the first meeting this season between The Rock and Crimson Hawks while Evran turned in a 10-point, 18-rebound double-double.
