Rock loses to Pitt-Johnstown in four sets

The Slippery Rock volleyball team lost in four sets (25-23, 25-21, 24-26, 25-15) to Pitt-Johnstown at home Friday on Senior Night at Morrow Field House.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University volleyball team lost in four sets (25-23, 25-21, 24-26, 25-15) to Pitt-Johnstown at home Friday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division competition at Morrow Field House.

The divisional loss moves The Rock's record to 9-15 overall and 2-9 inside the PSAC West while UPJ improves to 15-8 overall and 6-5 in league matches.

In what was the penultimate home match of her collegiate career, Callie Chevalier turned in a 19-kill, 16-dig double-double performance. She matched her career-high kill total on an ultra-efficient .271 attack percentage.

Gwen McCarthy compiled her second double-digit kill output in the last three matches with 10 while Lauren VonderHaar rounded out The Rock's leading attackers at seven kills to go along with three blocks (two solo / one assisted).

Victoria Nalbach and Emry Rumbaugh aided VonderHaar up front with two blocks apiece while libero Kara Pasquale made a match-best 22 digs all the while serving one of SRU's three aces on the night.

Paityn Krause distributed 20 assists and Jaeden Yost added 16 along with one ace. Yost's 16 assists upped her career total to 2,053, moving her past Haley Defibaugh (2014-17) for seventh place all-time at The Rock.

As the scores indicate, the opening two sets were very tight as the two evenly matched opponents combined for 21 ties and 11 lead changes, but the Pitt-Johnstown was ultimately able to come out with narrow decisions in both sets (25-23, 25-21).

Undeterred, Slippery Rock avoided the sweep by claiming a 26-24 win in the third set as SRU and UPJ traded sizable runs throughout only for The Rock to register three of the final four points via kills from Chevalier, McCarthy and VonderHaar.

However, The Rock's hopes for a comeback victory were dashed in the fourth set when Pitt-Johnstown worked its way out to a 17-8 lead that SRU could never overcome en route to a 25-15 match-deciding victory.

The Mountain Cats closed the match holding advantages over The Rock in kills (57-46), attack percentage (.243-.109), aces (8-3), digs (80-61) and total blocks (9-6). Caroline Knight led Pitt-Johnstown with 19 kills, 10 digs and three blocks).

Prior to Friday's match, The Rock's 2025 senior class of Chevalier, VonderHaar, Yost and Arielle Walter were recognized for the contributions to the program over their careers in a pre-match ceremony.

Slippery Rock closes out the home portion of its 2025 schedule when it hosts IUP 2 p.m. Saturday at Morrow Field House.
