SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team dropped its home-opener to Glenville State University Saturday, 89-75, at Morrow Field House.
With the loss, Slippery Rock drops to 2-2 overall, while Glenville State improves to 3-0. All three of Glenville State's wins have come over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opponents.
This is the second consecutive season that Slippery Rock has fallen to Glenville State by the score of 89-75.
Alyssa Gillin led all Rock scorers with a career-high 22 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field overall. Gillin also grabbed five rebounds, dished out three assists and blocked two shots.
Iyanna Wade put in a career-high 17-point, six-assist performance and grabbed three rebounds as well.
Mairan Haggerty rounded out Slippery Rock's double-digit scorers with a career-high 15 points.
Sophia Hook grabbed a career-high five steals.
Kayley Joseph-Bernard stuffed the stat sheet with a six-point, 13-rebound, seven-block, four-assist, one-steal effort. The seven blocks are the third most in a single game in program history and the most since 1984-85 when Diane Walker had 12 blocks versus Clarion and 10 rejections against Edinboro.
SRU jumped out to a 24-21 first quarter lead. Slippery Rock has led after the first frame in every game this season.Glenville State took charge with a 25-18 second quarter, resulting in a four-point Pioneer lead entering halftime.
Glenville State jumped out to a 10-point advantage (58-48) with 5:15 left in the third quarter, but Slippery Rock countered with a 16-7 run to end the third frame with just a one-point deficit (65-64). However, Slippery Rock made just three of its 16 field goal attempts in the fourth quarter as the Pioneers outscored The Rock 24-11 in the fourth quarter to finish off their 14-point victory.
Slippery Rock finished shooting 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from the field overall, 34.8 percent (8-for-23) from the 3-point line and 76.5 percent (13-of-17) Â from the charity stripe.
The Rock edged out the Pioneers 24-23 in fast break points. Slippery Rock made a season-high eight 3-pointers and recorded a double-digit block total for the first time since having 11 blocks against West Chester Nov 22, 2024.
Glenville State was +17 on the glass (54-37), +20 on points in the paint (50-30), +22 on points off turnovers (37-15) and +5 on bench points (28-23).
GSU shot 41.2 percent (35-of-85) from the floor overall, 40.9 percent (9-for-22) from beyond the arc and 58.8 percent (10-of-17) from the foul line.
Carien Pinkney led Glenville State with 18 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. Nwando Okigbo (15) and Payton James (11) rounded out the Pioneers in double-figures.
Slippery Rock will hit the road once again for a 2:30 p.m. tipoff Nov. 26 at Tiffin University.
