PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team claimed its second-straight wire-to-wire victory in a fast-paced battle Wednesday at Lake Erie College, 83-78.
With the win, Slippery Rock breaks .500 for the first time this season with a 2-1 record overall, while Lake Erie's record drops to 0-1 overall.
Slippery Rock had a well-rounded scoring effort with four players finish in double-figures. SRU was led by
Sophia Hook as she recorded the first double-double of the season for The Rock with a 23-point, 10-rebound performance on 9-of-16 shooting from the field overall and 5-for-12 from the 3-point line.
Karianna Woods and
Alyssa Gillin both registered 16 points. Woods added five assists, four steals and three rebounds, while Gillin grabbed five rebounds, blocked one shot and forced one steal while shooting 7-of-10 from the field overall.
Iyanna Wade rounded out SRU's double-digit scorers with 12 points. The freshman also grabbed four rebounds and dished out two assists.
Kayley Joseph-Bernard put together a well-wounded effort with eight points, seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals.
Similar to their last game against Davis & Elkins College, The Rock took the lead on their opening possession with a made layup from Woods that they would never relinquish.
Slippery started the game on a 10-0 run and took its largest lead of 13 (27-14) with 8:08 left in the second quarter.
The Rock held their lead steady with a 32-point outburst in the third quarter that saw SRU shoot 85.7 percent (12-of-14). The 32 points is tied for the fourth largest scoring total in a quarter in program history.
Slippery Rock made free throws down the stretch in the fourth quarter to close out its five-point victory.
Slippery Rock shot a blistering 54.1 percent (33-of-61) from the field overall, while shooting 35 percent (7-for-20) from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the charity stripe. The last time SRU shot 54 percent or better was last season in a 62-59 loss at California (Pa.).
SRU was +6 on the glass (30-24) and +5 on fast break points (20-15). The trend of the team winning the battle in the paint coming out victorious continued as Slippery Rock outscored Lake Erie 48-34 inside.
Lake Erie finished the game shooting 50 percent (29-for-58) from the floor overall, 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from the 3-point line and 50 percent (11-for-22) from the free throw line.
Lake Erie saw heavy production from its bench as the Storm scored 56.4 percent of its points from the bench (44-of-78).
Nina Shaffer led the Storm in scoring with 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor overall. Marcela Rodriguez put in 18 points on an efficient 7-for-8 shooting from the field overall and Kylie Maxwell rounded out Lake Erie's double-digit scorers with 11 points.
Slippery Rock will host its 2025-26 home-opener 2 p.m. Saturday against Glenville State University.
