Rock bounces back with 67-55 win over Davis & Elkins

The Slippery Rock women’s basketball team earned its first win of the season with a wire-to-wire 67-55 victory over Davis & Elkins Sunday at the Atlantic Region Challenge.

ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team earned its first win of the season with a wire-to-wire 67-55 victory over Davis & Elkins College Sunday at the Atlantic Region Challenge hosted by Gannon University.

With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 1-1 overall on the year, while Davis & Elkins dropped to 0-2.

Slippery Rock's last wire-to-wire victory came last season in a 70-51 win over Mansfield.

Iyanna Wade led The Rock in scoring for the second consecutive game with 15 points on 4-of-12 from the field overall. Wade was followed by Sophia Hook with 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the floor overall and 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. Mairan Haggerty rounded out SRU's double-digit scorers with 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the field overall.

Alyssa Gillin (9), Karianna Woods (7), Kayley Joseph-Bernard (6), Deryn Moye (3) and Hannah Pugliese (2) closed out Slippery Rock's scorers.

SRU had five players grab at least five rebounds, led by Wade and Joseph-Bernard with nine boards each. Along with their rebounding effort, Wade and Joseph-Bernard both dished out six assists.

Joseph-Bernard led Slippery Rock's defensive stalwarts with three blocks, while Hook and Gillin picked up two steals each. Haggerty also blocked one shot.

Slippery Rock took the lead on its opening possession via a Hook 3-pointer and SRU never relinquished its lead.

The Rock's largest lead came after a 16-0 run to give SRU a 22-point advantage (48-26) with 3:56 to play in the third quarter.

The closest that Davis & Elkins brought the game to was a 10-point difference at 65-55 with less than one minute left in the matchup.

Slippery Rock ended the game shooting 36.9 percent (24-of-65) from the field overall, 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from beyond the arc and 72.2 percent (13-of-18) from the charity stripe. 

SRU was +3 on the glass (48-45), +6 on points in the paint (36-30), +12 on fast break points (22-10) and +5 on points off turnovers, even with the Senators forcing two more turnovers than The Rock (17-15).

Davis & Elkins ended the game with eight steals to Slippery Rock's six, but SRU blocked four shots compared to the Senator's zero rejections.

Davis & Elkins shot 32.4 percent (23-of-71) from the floor overall, 28.6 percent (2-of-7) from beyond the arc and 58.3 percent (7-12) from the free throw line. 

Davis & Elkins was led by Jahniya Marion and Briyanna Sapp who combined for 27 of the Senators 55 points on 12-of-23 shooting from the field overall.

Slippery Rock finishes its road trip 5:30 p.m. Nov. 19 at Lake Erie College.
