Rock receiving votes in national poll

The Rock football team dropped out of the top 25 for the first time in nearly seven years, but is still receiving votes as the third team outside the top 25 in the latest NCAA Division II national poll announced Monday by the American Football Coaches Association.

WACO, Texas – The Slippery Rock University football team dropped out of the top 25 but is still receiving votes in the NCAA Division II national rankings after the American Football Coaches Association released its updated national poll Monday.

The third and final public NCAA Regional Rankings will be unveiled later in the day Monday, which will be the only rankings that matter in terms of determining which eight teams from each of the four Super Regions will qualify for the NCAA Playoffs.

Slippery Rock's fall from the top 25 snaps a streak of 2,519 days as a nationally ranked program. The Rock were ranked inside the top 25 in every poll from the final rankings of the 2018 season through today's rankings release, a streak that stretched nearly seven full years. SRU is still receiving votes in this week's poll and is listed as the third team just outside the top 25. The Rock have been at least receiving votes in every poll dating back to week seven of the 2018 season, extending that streak to 2,590 days.

The top four spots in this week's poll were unchanged. Defending national champion Ferris State remained atop the poll with 29 first place votes after escaping Saginaw Valley State with a double overtime win. Harding remained second and earned two first place votes. West Florida and Kutztown remained third and fourth, while Colorado State-Pueblo moved up into the top five.

With Slippery Rock dropping out of the top 25, No. 4 Kutztown becomes the only Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference team in the rankings this week. PSAC West rivals Indiana (Pa.) and California (Pa.) both join SRU in the "others receiving votes" section of the poll to give the PSAC four total teams mentioned this week. IUP is the first team out of the rankings earning 32 points, while SRU earned 16 points as the third team outside the top 25 and Cal earned 10 points as the sixth team outside the top 25.

No. 9 Virginia Union of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association and No. 16 Johnson C. Smith of the CIAA combine with Kutztown to round out the three Super Region One teams in this week's top 25.

Frostburg State of the Mountain East Conference and Assumption from the Northeast 10 Conference join Slippery Rock, Indiana (Pa.) and California (Pa.) as teams from Super Region One to be listed in the "Others Receiving Votes" section of this week's poll.

While the national voters still have Slippery Rock listed as the fifth-best team from Super Region One, The Rock are likely to find themselves in an uncomfortable spot when the regional rankings are released later in the day Monday. SRU was ranked No. 7 last week before losing at Edinboro. The Rock still rank No. 6 in the region in the KPI metrics after the loss, but are likely going to need to win this week at Bloomsburg and get help from elsewhere in the region to qualify for a seventh straight trip to the NCAA Playoffs. The updated regional rankings are expected to be announced after 4 p.m. today.
