NCAA Regional Rankings

INDIANAPOLIS – The Slippery Rock University football team was ranked No. 9 in Super Region One when the NCAA Division II Football Committee announced the updated NCAA Regional Rankings Monday evening.

A breakdown of the regional rankings can be found below.

^ Bentley has earned the automatic bid from the NE10 Conference and will be one of the eight teams to represent the region in the playoffs.

WHAT ARE THE REGIONAL RANKINGS
The NCAA Regional Rankings are the only rankings that matter in terms of selecting which eight teams from each of the four NCAA Super Regions will qualify for the 2025 NCAA Division II Playoffs.

HOW ARE THE RANKINGS COMPILED
The NCAA Committee uses a plethora of data to determine the regional rankings, including the win-loss records, a weighted strength of schedule, wins against teams above .500, multiple performance indicator metrics that weigh the quality of wins and losses, head-to-head competition and more. The NCAA also generates a "performance indicator" score for each team that includes much of the data mentioned above.

PLAYOFF CHANGES THIS YEAR IN DIVISION II
The playoff field will expand from 28 teams to 32 teams this year with each region getting eight teams into the postseason and the No. 1 seeds no longer getting a first round bye. Also new for this year is automatic qualifying bids for each conference champion, which means Super Region One will have four automatic qualifiers and four at-large selections.

SUPER REGION ONE BREAKDOWN
Super Region One includes all teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, the Mountain East Conference, the Northeast 10 Conference and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Only the PSAC and the CIAA have a championship game, so the two automatic bids in those conferences will come from the winner of the title game, while the automatic qualifiers from the MEC and the NE10 will be the regular season champions.

SO WHO IS IN ALREADY?
Bentley (NE10) has already locked up the automatic bid after earning a win over Assumption last week. Despite the Falcons being outside the top 10, they are already guaranteed to be one of the eight qualifiers and are the only team in the region that is officially in the field already. Frostburg State currently leads the MEC standings and can lock up that automatic spot with a win this week. Kutztown and Indiana (Pa.) will play in the PSAC title game and Virginia Union and Johnson C. Smith will play in the CIAA title game. It is highly likely that all four teams playing in those two championship games will be in the postseason, even with a loss this week.

CONFERENCE BREAKDOWN THIS WEEK
The committee ranks 10 teams in the region, even though only eight spots are available. Of the 10 teams listed in this week's rankings, four are from the PSAC (including three from the PSAC West), three are from the CIAA, two are from the MEC and one is from the NE10.

SLIPPERY ROCK BY THE DATA

Slippery Rock currently ranks fifth in the region in strength of schedule (.532), sixth in the region in KPI and has a strong 4-2 record against teams above .500. Only four teams in the region have at least four wins over teams above .500 this year (Kutztown is 4-0, Slippery Rock is 4-2, California is 4-2, Edinboro is 4-3). The Rock rank 10th in the region in NCAA performance indicator score.

SLIPPERY ROCK AGAINST THE CURRENT TOP 10
The Rock are 1-1 against the other teams listed in this week's rankings with a win over No. 4 Indiana (Pa.) and a loss to No. 5 California (Pa.). SRU also has strong wins over Clarion, which currently ranks 12th in the region in KPI, Shepherd (13th in the region in KPI) and Franklin Pierce (17th in the region in KPI). The biggest problem on the SRU resume is not the loss at Edinboro last week, but rather the early season loss at Gannon (1-9), which currently ranks 31st in the region in KPI with its only win coming over SRU.

CAN THE ROCK STILL GET IN?
The short answer is yes, but the stars have to align. First and foremost, Slippery Rock has to win this week on the road against a Bloomsburg team that gave undefeated Kutztown its only real challenge all year just last weekend before losing 35-27. Even if SRU wins this week, it will need help from one or two other teams ahead of it. Because of Bentley locking up an automatic bid while being outside the rankings, that means only seven spots remain, so SRU has to jump at least two teams to get in. The most impactful games for SRU this week will be Assumption at West Chester and California at Shippensburg. If Assumption and Cal both win this week, SRU is likely to stay on the outside looking in. Fayetteville State (6-3) also currently sits at No. 8, but does not play this week while the rest of the teams in the rankings have a chance to add another win.

SLIPPERY ROCK'S PLAYOFF HISTORY
Slippery Rock has reached the NCAA Playoffs in each of the last six years and currently owns the second longest active streak among all programs in the nation, trailing only the 10 straight trips for Ferris State. The defending champions from Ferris have already locked up a spot in the playoffs this year to extend their streak to 11 years. The Rock have not missed the postseason since 2017.

NEXT UP FOR THE ROCK

Slippery Rock will close the regular season with a noon kickoff on the road at Bloomsburg Saturday.

SELECTIONS ANNOUNCED SUNDAY NIGHT
The rankings announced today will be the final public rankings that are announced. The playoff field and full bracket will be announced during the NCAA Selection Show Sunday evening at 6 p.m. on NCAA.com.
