SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University alumnus and current football play-by-play broadcaster Bob Cupp was recognized Saturday with the Heaslip Media Award presented by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Â
Cupp, who is currently in his 22nd season broadcasting Rock football games, was recognized on the field prior to No. 22 Slippery Rock's home game against Clarion.
Â
The Heaslip Media Award is presented annually by the PSAC to a member of the media for their dedication and commitment to covering the conference's member institutions.
Â
Cupp graduated from Slippery Rock in 1986 and immediately began a career in the radio industry working with the Butler Radio Network. He is currently in his 41st year working with the network, where he hosts numerous music and news programming and goes by the radio DJ name of "The Rock Doctor."
Â
A member of the SRU Media Hall of Fame, Cupp is closing his 22nd year covering Slippery Rock football games, where he serves as the primary play-by-play announcer for games on The Rock Station, 97.7 FM. He and color analyst Glenn Thompson cover all home and away SRU games and have traveled thousands of miles in their roles, including numerous trips to New England, Michigan, Kentucky and every campus in the PSAC. They also provide the commentary for all home SRU football video broadcasts on the Rock Athletics Digital Network.
Â
Cupp is the second active member of the media to win the Heaslip Award for their coverage of Slippery Rock Athletics. Butler Eagle sports writer John Enrietto, who still covers The Rock football beat, was also honored with the Heaslip Award in 2014.
Â
"Bob has been a tremendous asset for Slippery Rock throughout his career and this is a fitting honor for him," said
Jon Holtz, director of athletic communication. "The commitment and dedication that Bob and Glenn bring to covering our student-athletes is remarkable in an era where this kind of coverage has dwindled. We're lucky to have them and couldn't be more thrilled to see Bob be recognized for his work."
