COACHING MATCHUP
Slippery Rock head coach Shawn Lutz is in his 30th overall year at The Rock and his 10th year (ninth season) as head coach, where he owns an 85-23 record with nine straight winning seasons, five PSAC West titles and six trips to the NCAA playoffs. Lutz was the PSAC West Coach of the Year in 2018, 2019 and 2023 and was the Don Hansen Football Gazette Division II National Coach of the Year in 2019. The 85 wins are the most among all PSAC head coaches since the 2016 season. Lutz was an assistant at SRU for 20 years before taking over the program in 2016. He has been a member of the coaching staff for 13 of SRU's 20 PSAC West titles. Lutz played tight end at WVU, graduating in 1996, and earned a master's degree in sport management from Slippery Rock in 2003.

Kevin May is in his seventh overall year at Seton Hill and his first season as head coach. He spent the last six seasons as defensive coordinator before taking over as head coach prior to this fall. The head coaching job at SHU is the first head coaching position of May's career. He spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Texas A&M Kingsville prior to his time at Seton Hill, where he served as a linebackers coach as well as a safeties coach and special teams coordinator. May was a linebacker at Occidental College in California, graduating in 2011.

NATIONAL RANKINGS
Slippery Rock dropped 10 spots to No. 24 in this week's AFCA Division II national poll. The Rock also dropped from No. 16 to out of this week's D2football.com media poll. Both polls are on page nine of the PDF game notes linked above.

SETON HILL QUICK HITS
• The Griffins are off to a 3-3 overall start to the season with losses to Fairmont State, West Chester and Indiana (Pa.).
• SHU is coming off perhaps the biggest win in program history with a 16-7 upset win on the road at No. 6 California (Pa.) last week.
• SHU is under the direction of first year head coach Kevin May, who spent the last six seasons as the defensive coordinator with the program.
• SHU averages 23.2 points and 284.2 yards of offense per game with 126.0 rushing yards and 158.2 passing yards. The defense allows 25.7 points and 373.0 yards per game with opponents running for 148.2 yards and passing for 224.8 yards per game.
• Three different QBs have played with traditional passers Boden St. Marie (654 yards, 7 TD, 3 INT) and Hayden Teska (224 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT) both battling injuries. In their absence, backup dual threat QB Darrian Carter filled in last week and led the team over Cal by rushing for just shy of 100 yards and one TD. He has attempted just 18 passes with seven completions
• RB Ky'Ron Craggette is among the best in the PSAC and is the offensive workhorse for SHU. He has carried the ball 116 times already this year with no other running back having more than 10 carries. Craggette has 517 yards with four TD and is averaging 86.2 yards per game.
• Four receivers have at least 144 yards on the year with Isaac Ashley leading the way with 11 catches for 18-0 yards and two TD.
• SHU's defense is among the national leaders in sacks with 24 sacks in six games, led by Anthony Stribling with 6.5 sacks and 9.5 TFL. DB Darius Patterson has pulled down a league-leading five INT already this year.

STAPLES IN THE NATIONAL POLL
Slippery Rock has appeared in every weekly national poll released by the American Football Coaches Association since the final rankings of the 2018 season, a streak that stretches more than six full years. The Rock opened the 2025 season ranked No. 4 in the national poll and remained there for four weeks before dropping 10 spots in each of the last two weeks to No. 14 last week and No. 24 this week.

LAST WEEK FOR SRU
Slippery Rock was stunned in Erie last week with a 38-35 loss at winless Gannon after the Golden Knights capitalized on three huge special teams plays and three SRU turnovers to pull off the upset. It snapped a streak of 10 straight SRU wins against Gannon. The Rock ran for 374 yards and put up 539 yards of total offense, but failed to score on multiple trips inside Gannon territory and couldn't come up with defensive stops after Gannon's special teams plays that included an onside kick and a fake punt on top of a kickoff return touchdown. JayJay Jordan ran for 247 yards and three touchdowns in the win.

LAST WEEK FOR SETON HILL
Seton Hill was on the other end of an upset, going on the road to undefeated No. 6 California (Pa.) and walking away with a 16-7 upset win after scoring 10 points in the fourth quarter and shutting out the Vulcans in the second half. The Griffins outgained Cal 309-287 and put up 238 rushing yards in the game. Ky'Ron Craggette ran for 155 yards and one TD on 27 carries, including a 48-yard TD with just over two minutes left that sealed the win. Backup QB Darrian Carter ran for 97 yards and one TD and threw for 71 yards with one INT.

LAST MEETING WITH SHU
No. 10 Slippery Rock scored 28 points in the second half to pull away for a 38-20 win over Seton Hill at home in week 10 last fall. The Rock outgained the Griffins 486-336 in total offense and overcame three turnovers and 11 penalties for 115 yards in the win. SRU threw for 248 yards and ran for 238 yards, while Seton Hill ran for 191 yards and threw for 145 yards. None of the SRU players that scored in that game are on the roster this fall. SHU was led by Ky'Ron Craggette with 113 rushing yards and one TD on 25 carries.

SPECIAL TEAMS ISSUES PROVE COSTLY
Slippery Rock suffered three special teams blunders last week, allowing an 89-yard kickoff return TD, giving up an uncontested onside kick and allowing a fake punt conversion. Gannon turned all three of those plays into points the other way and used those huge momentum-changing plays to pull off the upset.

NO MORE ROOM FOR ERROR
With back-to-back one-possession losses the last two weeks, Slippery Rock's NCAA postseason streak is now in serious jeopardy. The Rock will most likely have to win out the rest of the way and could still need help to extend their playoff streak to seven straight years. SRU entered this fall with the second longest active playoff streak in the country at six straight years, trailing only the 10 straight appearances by Ferris State.

THE ROCK ON THE ROAD
SRU is 23-3 in regular season road games since the start of the 2019 season and is 1-1 on the road so far this fall.

ONLY THREE REGULAR SEASON LOSSES SINCE 2022
Slippery Rock has only lost three times in the regular season since 2022 with losses to California in 2024 and 2025 and now a loss to Gannon in 2025. The Rock are 22-3 in the regular season since the beginning of the 2023 season with the only losses in 2023 coming in the PSAC championship game and the NCAA quarterfinals and the only other loss in 2024 coming in the national semifinals.

FIVE PSAC WEST LOSSES SINCE 2017
Slippery Rock has lost just five PSAC Western Division games since Oct. 21, 2017 and is 40-5 against the Division since then, including 38-3 over six full seasons (2018-24) with five PSAC West titles over that stretch. The Rock have won or at least shared nine of the 13 PSAC West titles dating back to 2011, easily leading all programs in the Division. SRU head coach Shawn Lutz is 43-7 against the PSAC West in the last seven seasons and 46-11 against the Division in his career as head coach.

0-2 IN THE PSAC WEST
After nearly a decade of dominance in the PSAC West, Slippery Rock finds itself 0-2 in the division standings and sitting alone in last place in the division after the first two weeks of divisional play. The last time SRU was 0-2 to start PSAC West play was early in the 2001 season, before all but five current SRU players were even born. The only players on the SRU roster that were born the last time SRU was 0-2 in PSAC West play were Joshua Hayes, Woodburn Schofield, Anthony Vespo, Mark Williams and Demeatric Crenshaw.

TWO PSAC WEST LOSSES IS RARE FOR SRU
Slippery Rock was 18-2 in PSAC West games over the last three seasons entering this fall (2022-24,) but is off to an 0-2 start this year. The last time The Rock lost two PSAC West games in the same season was the 2017 season when SRU went 5-2 in the division. From 2018-24, SRU went 38-3 against the PSAC West and is now 40-5 in its last 45 PSAC West games dating back to the last two weeks of the 2017 season.

LAST SEASON WITH TWO REGULAR SEASON LOSSES
At 3-2 overall, The Rock have already dropped a pair of regular season games, which marks the first time since 2017 that SRU has lost two regular season games in a single season.

LAST SEASON WITH THREE REGULAR SEASON LOSSES
Slippery Rock has not lost three games in the same regular season since 2017 when the team finished with an 8-3 overall record.

JORDAN LEADS PSAC / AMONG NCAA LEADERS
RB JayJay Jordan leads the PSAC in every major rushing category and all-purpose yardage this year while ranking among the national leaders as well. He has rushed for 703 yards and six touchdowns on 84 carries and is averaging 8.4 yards per carry and 140.6 rushing yards per game. Jordan also has 12 catches for 138 yards and two receiving TD and 198 total kickoff return yards for 1,039 all-purpose yards, an average of 207.8 yards per game. He ranks No. 1 in the PSAC and No. 2 in the nation in all-purpose yards per game, No. 1 in the PSAC and No. 4 in the nation in yards per carry, No. 1 in the PSAC and No. 3 in the nation in rushing yards per game and No. 1 in the PSAC and No 10 in the nation in touchdowns scored (10).

BACK-TO-BACK HUGE GAMES FOR JORDAN
RB JayJay Jordan ran for 247 yards and three TD last week, which is the most rushing yards in a game by any player in the PSAC this year and the sixth most rushing yards by any player in the country this year. It was the 11th best single-game rushing performance in SRU history. That followed his performance against California (Pa.), where he put up 323 all-purpose yards, which is the most in a game by any player in the PSAC this year. Jordan now ranks No. 1 and No. 2 in the PSAC this year in single-game all-purpose yards with his performances over the last two weeks (323 vs. Cal, 266 vs. Gannon).

HARRISON FIRST CAREER TD
RB Quentin Harrison finally broke through with his first career rushing TD last week after he busted off a 57-yard touchdown run. Harrison enters this week with 267 rushing yards on the year for an average of 6.4 yards per carry and 53.4 yards per game.

300+ RUSHING YARDS IN A GAME
Slippery Rock's 374 rushing yards last week was the first time an SRU team ran for more than 300 yards in a game since a 345-yard effort against California (Pa.) Oct. 27, 2018. It marked just the 11th time since the 2010 season that an SRU team ran for more than 300 yards in a single game.

LAST TIME SRU RUSHED FOR 300+ AND LOST
Slippery Rock had won its last eight straight games when rushing for at least 300 yards as a team. The loss last week to Gannon marked the first time an SRU team lost a game while running for more than 300 yards since a 42-38 loss to C.W. Post in the final game of the 2010 season.

SABO'S THIRD STRAIGHT GAME WITH A TD
WR John Sabo caught his first career TD pass three weeks ago against Shippensburg. He grabbed two more against California and one against Gannon to rack up four TD grabs in the last three games, tying Latrell Sutton for the most TD catches on the team entering this week.

GROWTH OPPORTUNITY FOR OWENS
Redshirt freshman QB DaOne Owens had his first muti-turnover game last week when he tossed two interceptions at Gannon. Owens threw for one TD pass and had his first game with under 200 passing yards and less than four touchdown passes while making just his third career start. It marked the first real signs of adversity for Owens, who has thrown for 726 yards and nine TD while rushing for 92 yards and two TD since taking over as The Rock's QB in the fourth quarter of week two against Shepherd.

THREE STARTS BY A FRESHMAN QB AT SRU
QB DaOne Owens is the first freshman or redshirt freshman QB at Slippery Rock to start at least three games in his freshman season since Nate Crookshank, who won the job in 2004 and held it four years through 2007. Crookshank and SRU Hall of Famer Randy McKavish (1997-00) were the last two freshmen QBs to win the job in their freshman season and start all four years at SRU.

SUTTON HELD WITHOUT A CATCH
After catching at least one TD pass in each of the first four games of the season, WR Latrell Sutton was held without a catch last week at Gannon. Sutton was targeted in the end zone, but a pass sailed just high and out of his reach.

TURNOVER WOES
Slippery Rock turned the ball over three times last week and now has three games with at least three turnovers on the year. The Rock enter this week ranked 127th in the nation in turnovers lost with 12 turnovers on the year, including seven interceptions thrown and five fumbles lost. SRU turned the ball over 15 total times in 14 games in 2024 (1.07 per game) but has more than doubled that early this fall and is averaging 2.4 turnovers per game in 2025.

SCORING A LOT OF POINTS
The Rock offense is putting up a lot of points, including 73 total points the last two weeks in a pair of losses. SRU is averaging 34.8 points per game over five games this year and has scored at least 35 points in four straight games entering this week.

GIVING UP A LOT OF POINTS
Despite the offensive production, The Rock have dropped the last two games after allowing 83 total points in losses to California (45-38) and Gannon (38-35). SRU posted a 42-0 shutout over Shippensburg three weeks ago, but has allowed 41.5 points per game since that shutout.

INJURIES STACKING UP
Slippery Rock has been hit with a staggering amount of injuries to key players in the first half of the season. That boiled over last week when SRU was forced to play without four more starters, including both starting linebackers Jacob Snow and Teddy Gregory Jr. and starting defensive end Brett Kwoka on defense, as well as starting tight end Carson Heckathorn on offense. Those injuries followed the loss of receiver Reggie Fleurima, offensive center Mohamed Aly and backup tight end Vincent Berardi, who all missed last week's game, and the continued loss of starting right tackle Jake Jonassen, who was injured leading up to the opener, and linebacker Tyree Johnson, who has yet to be cleared to play this year.

THREE TRUE FRESHMEN LINEBACKERS PLAY
With all of the injuries last week, Slippery Rock only had four linebackers dressed for the game with sophomore transfer Tyler Cain being joined by three true freshmen – Troy Lucas, Spencer Barninger and John Frangos. Lucas, who had played in a few games this fall, was injured during the game, leaving just three dressed linebackers. Both Barninger and Frangos made their collegiate debuts with Barninger grabbing one interception and finishing with five tackles and Frangos recording one tackle and a half-tackle for loss.

SIX PLAYERS MAKE FIRST SRU START AT GANNON
With all the injuries and other lineup shuffling, Slippery Rock saw six players make their first SRU start at Gannon last week, including five on defense: LB Tyler Cain, DE Elijah Halley, LB Troy Lucas, DB Carmen Metcalfe and DB Anthony Smith and one on offense: TE Lou Swartz. Those six brings the SRU total to 19 players on offense and defense that have made their first SRU start over the first five games.

CAIN AND HALLEY STEP UP
LB Tyler Cain and DE Elijah Halley both played strong games in their first starts last week with Cain leading SRU with 11 total tackles and Halley racking up three tackles for loss and one sack. Halley is now tied for the team lead with 5.5 tackles for loss and ranks second on the team in sacks with 3.5, trailing only Brian Young Jr. with 4.5 sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss.

TOP TACKLERS IN THE SECONDARY
Slippery Rock enters this week with its top two tacklers both coming from the secondary with CB Kanye Thompson leading the team with 40 total tackles to go with 3.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks and three forced fumbles and safety Michael Henwood ranked second with 36 total tackles to go with one interception. Thompson's three forced fumbles rank third among all players in Division II, while Brett Kwoka leads all players in Division II with three recoveries.

TEAM EFFORT TO GET TO THE QB
Slippery Rock enters this week with 10 different players that have combined for 19 total sacks in five games. The Rock defense ranks fifth in the nation in sacks per game at 3.80 with Brian Young Jr. (4.5) and Elijah Halley (3.5) leading the way.

ROBERTS MOVES UP CAREER PAT LIST
PK Kevin Roberts booted five more PAT kicks last week to improve to 24-of-24 on the season and extend his career total to 88 made PAT kicks. That moves him up to ninth all-time at SRU and brings him to within 12 made PAT kicks of becoming the eighth kicker at SRU to make at least 100 PAT kicks.

CAPTAINS
Slippery Rock has named four captains for the 2025 season with the team voting for two offensive players and two defensive players to serve as captains. The offensive captains are quarterback Anthony Vespo and offensive tackle Joe Cooper, while the defensive captains are safety Michael Henwood and linebacker Jacob Snow.

COOPER NAMED TO EAST-WEST SHRINE BOWL WATCHLIST
SRU left tackle Joe Cooper picked up a high honor entering this fall when he was named as one of just 10 players in Division II on the East-West Shrine Bowl Watchlist. Cooper, at 6-foot-7 and 320 pounds, has already received visits from multiple NFL teams.

COOPER AND KWOKA ON D2 ELITE 100 LIST
Slippery Rock landed two players on the D2football.com Elite 100 list entering this season with left tackle Joe Cooper and defensive lineman Brett Kwoka both being recognized.

WINNING SEASONS STREAK
Slippery Rock has put together a winning season in each of the last 15 years, which ranks ninth among all Division II programs for the longest active winning seasons streak in the country. The only other program in the PSAC with more consecutive winning seasons currently is California (Pa.), which has strung together 20 winning seasons entering 2025.

DIVISION II PLAYOFF CHANGES
Division II football underwent a regional realignment this year with Conference Carolinas adding football. The division also expanded the playoff field from 28 teams to 32 teams, with each Super Region set to get eight teams in this year and the No. 1 seeds no longer receiving a first-round bye. Super Region One is now all schools in the PSAC, the Mountain East Conference (MEC), the Northeast-10 Conference (NE10) and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). The champions in each league will earn an automatic bid, while four other at-large selections will fill out the regional bracket.

UP NEXT
Slippery Rock returns home to host PSAC West leader Indiana (Pa.) for Homecoming next Saturday at 1 p.m. The Crimson Hawks have a bye week this week, which will mark the second time in three weeks that SRU faces a team coming off a bye.
