BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team ended its time at the 2025 Intercollegiate Tennis Associations Atlantic Region Championships Sunday.
Â
SRU was represented on "Championship Sunday" by the duo of
Nicole Kempton and
Alissia Kivi, who earned a spot in the doubles final after recording three consecutive victories over the course of the weekend from their position as the second seed in the bracket.
Â
Kempton and Kivi met the top-seeded team of Sara Martinez and Filippa Larsson from the University of Charleston in the finals.
Â
The Rock's talented tandem took the opening set in 6-2 fashion, but Charleston was able to eke out back-to-back wins - 7-6 (7-5) and 12-10 – to take the championship and earn an automatic bid into the upcoming ITA Cup (Oct. 16-19).
Â
Formerly known as the Small College Nationals, the ITA Cup has history dating back to 1986, and it is the only singles and doubles national championship event for the Division II and NAIA levels. The ITA Cup features the champions from 60 regional ITA Championships and select at-large qualifiers from Division II, Division III, NAIA and NJCAA.
Â
Despite Sunday's defeat, Kempton and Kivi stand a great chance to earn an at-large bid into the ITA Cup thanks to its runner-up showing at the ITA Atlantic Region Championships and also finishing last season as the No. 38 doubles team in the nation in the final ITA rankings.
Â
One of the top returning doubles team in all of Division II, Kempton and Kivi have combined for a 34-12 record as a pairing over the last two years including an 8-4 mark through the early stages of the 2025-26 season. Of the 12 losses, only eight have come against fellow Division II competition. They have made the finals of the ITA Atlantic Region doubles draw in each of the last two years.
Â
Slippery Rock returns to action when it hosts Bowling Green University for an exhibition at noon on Oct. 11 at the SRU Tennis Courts.
