SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University volleyball team closed out a perfect home weekend with a convincing four-set (25-19, 25-20, 18-25, 28-26) victory over California (Pa.) Saturday at Morrow Field House.
Â
Saturday's win, combined with its Friday victory over Seton Hill University, gives The Rock six wins over their last eight matches while improving their record to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division competition. Meanwhile, the Vulcans drop to 13-3 overall and 1-1 in league matches following the loss.
Â
Slippery Rock's victory over California was the definition of a true all-around team effort.
Â
Offensively, four Rock athletes finished with double-digit kill production in
Callie Chevalier (15),
Lauren VonderHaar (14),
Gwen McCarthy (12) and
Emry Rumbaugh (11). The Rock's quartet of double-digit kill providers combined for a .254 attack percentage.
Â
Marley Annis served a team-high two aces. Setters
Paityn Krause (25) and
Jaeden Yost (22) combined for 47 of Slippery Rock's 54 assists with both serving one ace apiece as well.
Â
SRU's stout front line featured VonderHaar going for 10 total blocks (three solo / seven assisted) with Rumbaugh (4), McCarthy (3),
Addison Jones (4) and
Ava Haynes (3) all tallying multiple block assists as well.
Â
Libero
Kara Pasquale compiled 23 digs for her eighth 20+ dig outing of 2025. Krause (14) and Chevalier (12) also captured double-digit dig totals in the win.
Â
Chevalier, VonderHaar and Krause all provided The Rock with double-doubles.
Â
Collectively, Slippery Rock posted a single-match season-high in kills (59) while holding advantages over the Vulcans in attack percentage (.200-.195), kills (59-55) and assists (54-51). Both teams had 14 blocks and five aces while California edged SRU in digs (74-70).
Â
In what was a theme for the entire match, the opening set was a back-and-forth bout between two evenly matched teams. However, with California leading 19-18 The Rock rattled off seven consecutive points to close out a 25-19 victory. Annis had two aces over the run.
Â
SRU claimed the opening six points of the second set. While the Vulcans did claw back to within three points, Slippery Rock used a decisive run in the middle stages of the game to open a nine-point edge (16-7) that allowed the hosts to trade points with its PSAC West counterparts down the stretch for a 25-20 win. Chevalier had four kills in the second set.
Â
The Vulcans avoided the sweep with a 25-18 victory in the third set before Slippery Rock played its way out to a seemingly safe 15-7 advantage in the fourth set only for California to steadily chip away at SRU's lead to pull ahead 22-21.
Â
From there, SRU pushed itself into a match point situation with a kill by Rumbaugh and an attack error by the Vulcans. While California pressured The Rock by pulling itself into ties at 24-24, 25-25 and 26-26, Slippery Rock ultimately prevailed thanks to back-to-back Cal miscues en route to the 28-26 win.
Â
Sarah Stephenson had a match-high 25 kills and Lindsey Scammell garnered seven blocks (four solo / three assisted) to pace the Vulcans.
Â
VonderHaar continued her approach to The Rock's career block record by passing Anastasia Urbanik (2005-08) for second place in program history. She now has 344 rejections, 24 behind Laurie Flynn's (1991-94) program record of 368.
Â
Slippery Rock continues its homestand with a 6 p.m. Oct. 10 match against Edinboro at Morrow Field House.
