Kivi and Kempton lead way at regional championships

In addition to playing their way into the semifinals in the doubles bracket, Nicole Kempton and Alissia Kivi both punched their tickets to the quarterfinals in the singles tournament to lead the Slippery Rock women’s tennis team on day two of the ITA Atlantic Region Championships.

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis continued its time at the 2025 ITA Atlantic Region Championships with a successful day two Friday at the Burt Reese Tennis Center on the campus of Bloomsburg University.
 
A long day turned into a long night at the regional championships as the doubles Round of 16 and quarterfinals were conducted as well as the singles second round and Round of 16 on the women's side in addition to men's competition.
 
In addition to playing their way into the semifinals in the doubles bracket, the combination of Nicole Kempton and Alissia Kivi both punched their tickets to the quarterfinals in the singles tournament to lead The Rock's efforts Friday.
 
Kempton and Kivi started their day by rolling to an 8-3 victory over Charleston's Riva Hondiashvili and Viola Hirzberger in the second round followed by a close 8-6 triumph over the duo of Charliz Tabili and Isabelle Torrres of Indiana University (Pa.) in the quarterfinals.
 
Friday's wins send Kempton and Kivi into the semifinals of the doubles championship against IUP's Hannah Beitat and Annemiek Sterk with a spot in the championship on the line. With their two victories, Kempton and Kivi will enter Saturday with a 7-3 record.
 
Following doubles action, all four of The Rock's singles entries advanced out of the second round.
 
Top-seeded Amaia Balaguer Brau beat Kutztown's Isabela de Nadai (6-3, 6-1) before losing in the Round of 16 to IUP's Asel Calbay (6-4, 6-1).
 
Likewise, Dari Sakhanova downed Cecilia Carayol of Edinboro in the second round (7-6 (7-5), 6-1) before having her championship run come to an end with a Round of 16 loss to Charleston's Sara Martinez – the tournament's second seed – 6-2, 6-3.
 
Both Kempton and Kivi made it through their two matches with relative ease in terms of final scores.
 
Kivi, the tournament's third seed, first bested Lara Smith of Fairmont State (6-4, 6-2) followed by 6-2, 6-0 win over California's Teddi Isherwood.
 
Likewise, sixth-seeded Kempton defeated West Virginia Wesleyan's Sneha Sundaraneedi 6-1, 6-0 before beating Hope Backx of Fairmont State (6-2, 6-1) in the Round of 16.
 
Both Kivi and Kempton will face opponents from Charleston in the quarterfinals as Kivi meets Filippa Larsson and Kempton squares off with Sofiia Krasikova. Kivi is 1-0 against Larsson in her career.
 
Kivi brings a perfect 9-0 record on the year into Saturday's singles matches with Kempton close behind at 7-1.
 
The doubles semifinals will be held Saturday while the quarterfinals and semifinals of the singles bracket will be conducted. Day three of the 2025 ITA Atlantic Region Championships will begin at 10 a.m.
