LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Slippery Rock University defensive back Kanye Thompson earned Western Division Defensive Athlete of the Week honors when the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference announced its weekly football awards Monday.
 
Thompson, a junior from McKeesport, Pennsylvania, picks up his second PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week award this season for his performance in The Rock's 30-27 Homecoming win Saturday against Indiana (Pa.).
 
The Crimson Hawks entered the game with the top rated passing offense in the country and the highest rated passer from all levels of college football. IUP was averaging more than 353 passing yards per game and completing better than 76 percent of its passes.
 
Thompson led an SRU defensive effort that limited the IUP passing attack to 15-of-33 for 233 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. He finished the day with five total tackles, including four solo stops and one solo sack. He also forced one fumble and broke up two passes to help The Rock defense finish the day with four total sacks and 10 pass breakups.
 
No. 25 Slippery Rock won its third straight game against IUP and improved to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in PSAC West action this fall. The Rock are off this week with a bye and return to action next Saturday, Nov. 1 at home against Clarion on Senior Day.
