SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Behind a
Coral Piramo third-quarter goal, the Slippery Rock University field hockey team earned a 1-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference victory over Frostburg State University Wednesday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
Â
Wednesday's win improves The Rock's record to 5-7 overall and 1-4 inside the PSAC. SRU has now eclipsed its win total from each of the last two years with five games still remaining in the 2025 regular season. Frostburg State drops to 2-11 overall and 0-5 in league matches.
Â
In addition to being SRU's first conference win of the season, Wednesday's victory also avenges its 2-1 non-conference loss at Frostburg State earlier in the season.
Â
Piramo's goal was her second of the season. The game-winning strike was set up by
Roz Mikulak, who tallied her team-leading fourth assist in 2025.
Â
Collectively, Slippery Rock registered 10 shots on goal against the Bobcats for what was its second game of the season with a double-digit shot on goal total.
Â
Grace Williams and
Madison Shomo compiled multiple shots on target with three and two, respectively, while the quintet of Piramo, Mikulak,
Megan Rude,
Sammy Graci and
Christina Clymer had one apiece.
Â
Defensively, Slippery Rock logged the team's third shutout of the season behind goalkeeper
Leah Riegling, who made three saves for her second clean sheet of the year.
Haylie Sucharski aided in the shutout with a what turned out to be a huge first-quarter defensive save, her fourth of 2025.
Â
The Rock finished the win holding advantages over Frostburg State in total shots (13-8), shots on goal (10-4) and penalty corners (8-3).
Â
Following an opening quarter that was played predominantly in the Frostburg State attacking zone and resulted in five of the Bobcats' eight total shots being attempted, SRU largely controlled possession for the final three quarters. Â
Â
The Rock broke through a tough Frostburg State backline in the final minute of the third quarter when Mikualk found a wide open Piramo in the middle of FSU's circle with a crisp pass from the far side that Piramo promptly placed in the back of the cage with 31 seconds left to play in the third quarter.
Â
Solid game-tying opportunities were few and far between over the final 15 minutes as The Rock's defense cleared any serious threat to secure the home victory.
Â
Frostburg State goalkeeper Zoe Barnes made nine saves and Mikyla Rineer posted two shots on goal to lead the Bobcats' efforts.
Â
Slippery Rock returns to competition on the road 10 a.m. Saturday at No. 1 Kutztown University.
