COACHING MATCHUP
Slippery Rock head coach
Shawn Lutz is in his 30th overall year at The Rock and his 10th year (ninth season) as head coach, where he owns an 86-23 record with nine straight winning seasons, five PSAC West titles and six trips to the NCAA playoffs. Lutz was the PSAC West Coach of the Year in 2018, 2019 and 2023 and was the Don Hansen Football Gazette Division II National Coach of the Year in 2019. The 86 wins are the most among all PSAC head coaches since the 2016 season. Lutz was an assistant at SRU for 20 years before taking over the program in 2016. He has been a member of the coaching staff for 13 of SRU's 20 PSAC West titles. Lutz played tight end at WVU, graduating in 1996, and earned a master's degree in sport management from Slippery Rock in 2003.
Â
Paul Tortorella got his education from his employer's biggest rival, graduating with a physical education degree from Slippery Rock in 1985. He never played football at The Rock. Tortorella, like Lutz, was a longtime assistant coach before taking over the reins of the program in 2017. He spent 22 seasons as an assistant, serving as the defensive coordinator from 1995-2016. Now in his ninth year (eighth season), Tortorella owns a 65-20 record as head coach and has led IUP to two PSAC West titles and three trips to the NCAA Playoffs (2017, '19. '22).
Â
NATIONAL RANKINGS
Slippery Rock dropped one spot to No. 25 in this week's AFCA Division II national poll. Indiana is receiving votes in the AFCA poll. Neither team is ranked in the D2football.com poll. Both polls are available on page nine of the PDF notes linked above.
Â
IUP QUICK HITS
• IUP opened the year with a 13-9 loss at home to Ashland and has reeled off four dominant wins since to get to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in PSAC West games.
• The Crimson Hawks have scored at least 35 points in four straight games and 40 or more points three times in five games, including a 70-24 win over Millersville.
• IUP owns the No. 1 ranked total defense in the country with opponents averaging just 206.8 yards of offense per game, which includes 67.2 rushing yards and 139.6 passing yards per game. Opponents are scoring just 14.4 points per game.
• IUP's offense also possesses the No. 2 passing attack in the country with the No. 1 QB in the country in terms of passer rating. The Crimson Hawks throw for 353.4 yards per game and have thrown 20 TD passes in five games. The prolific passing offense has covered for the rushing attack, which averages 52.8 yards per game to rank last in the PSAC in rushing.
• IUP is scoring 39.2 points per game on offense and averages 406.2 total yards per game.
• QB Matthew Rueve is at his third school after previously playing at Boston College for four years before transferring to Findlay, where he was the starter in 2024. Rueve has had a breakout start to this year and ranks No. 1 in the country in passer rating, completing 76.1 percent of his passes for 1,608 yards with 18 TD and five INT, averaging 321.6 yards per game.
• Rueve has the privilege of throwing to one of the top receiving corps in the country, led by pro prospect Maurice Massey. The former Power Five receiver began his career at the University of Missouri in 2019. Massey has 22 catches for 470 yards and six TD this year. • Kicker Nick Andrasi is 3-for-4 on field goals with a long of 47 yards and punter Aiden Spitler is averaging 40.3 yards per punt as IUP boasts one of the most solid special teams units in the PSAC.
Â
STAPLES IN THE NATIONAL POLL
Slippery Rock has appeared in every weekly national poll released by the American Football Coaches Association since the final rankings of the 2018 season, a streak that stretches more than six full years and just shy of 2,500 straight days. The Rock opened the 2025 season ranked No. 4 in the national poll and remained there for four weeks before dropping 10 spots in after week four, 10 more spots after week five and one place to No. 25 this week.
Â
LAST WEEK FOR SRU
Slippery Rock responded after back-to-back one-possession losses with a dominant showing at Seton Hill last week with a 49-7 win. The Rock ran for 410 yards and outgained Seton Hill 542-217 in total offense while not turning the ball over.
DaOne Owens ran for 79 yards and three TD while throwing for 131 yards and one TD.
JayJay Jordan was named the PSAC West Offensive Athlete of the Week after running for 189 yards and one TD on just 13 carries, averaging 14.5 yards per carry.
Â
LAST GAME FOR INDIANA
IUP had a bye last week and had 13 total days to prep for the SRU game. The Hawks have not played since posting a 35-12 win at home against Edinboro Oct. 4 when they outgained the Scots 267-190 and came up with three takeaways with Edinboro losing three fumbles, including one that was returned for an IUP touchdown. Matthew Rueve completed 19-of-24 passes for 179 yards with two TD and one INT. Maurice Massey caught four passes for 76 yards and Leon Parson ran for 68 yards and one TD.
Â
SECOND GAME AGAINST TEAM COMINGÂ OFF A BYE
This will mark the second time in the last three weeks that SRU will face an opponent coming off a bye. Gannon also had a bye week prior to hosting SRU two weeks ago. Â
Â
LAST MEETING WITH INDIANA
No. 9 Slippery Rock and No. 21 IUP played an instant classic last year on IUP's Homecoming in a game that featured massive momentum swings both ways and four combined failed two-point conversions in the fourth quarter. The Rock jumped out to a 21-0 lead before IUP scored 26 straight points to take a 26-21 lead with 14:04 to play. SRU scored with 5:00 left to retake a 27-26 lead, only to watch IUP return the favor with a touchdown with 1:35 to play that put the hosts up 32-27. Slippery Rock needed just 1:19 to go 75 yards with
Brayden Long hitting
Mike Solomon in the end zone with 12 seconds left to put SRU up 33-32. IUP returned the kickoff into SRU territory after The Rock took two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties on the touchdown, allowing for a long field goal try at the buzzer, but the 54-yard kick came up short and SRU held on for the 33-32 win. SRU outgained IUP 395-352 in total offense with both teams averaging 6.0 yards per play in the game.
Â
TOUGH DEFENSE TO CRACK
IUP owns the No. 1 ranked total defense in the country and has not allowed a point in the first quarter and only seven points in the third quarter for seven total points in the 10 quarters that have started halves this year. The Crimson Hawks are outscoring opponents 55-0 in the first quarter and 41-7 in the third quarter for a 96-7 advantage in those two quarters.
Â
TWO WAYS TO MOVE IT
This game features two dynamic offenses that rank near the top of the PSAC and the country in total offense and scoring offense, but they do it in vastly different ways. Slippery Rock averages 252.8 rushing yards per game to rank first in the PSAC and seventh in the nation, while IUP rushes for only 52.8 yards per game to rank last in the PSAC and 153rd out of 157 teams nationally. The Hawks make up for that in a big way through the air, where they rank first in the PSAC and second nationally with 353.4 passing yards per game. SRU averages just 196.3 passing yards per game to rank 10th in the PSAC and 98th nationally.
Â
BEST ON BEST
Slippery Rock's potent rushing attack will need to find a way to solve IUP's rushing defense, which comes into this week ranked first in the PSAC and fifth nationally with opponents averaging just 67.2 rushing yards per game.
Â
FIRST HOME DAY GAME IN THREE WEEKS
This week's game will mark the first home game for SRU in a stretch of three weeks dating back to its last home game Sept. 27. It will also mark the first home day game for The Rock since the opening round of the NCAA Playoffs last November as SRU opened the year with three home night games in September.
Â
HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE
Rock football teams have compiled a 197-71 (.735) record in 51 seasons at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium (formerly known as N. Kerr Thompson Stadium). The Rock own a 97-26 (.789) home record since artificial turf was installed in the summer of 2003 and are 93-20 (.823) in home games since 2005. The numbers get even better in recent years, as The Rock are 75-11 (.872) at home since the beginning of the 2010 season and 63-8 (.887) since the beginning of the 2013 season.
Â
HOMECOMING HISTORYÂ |Â All-Time Homecoming Results
Slippery Rock's first official Homecoming game took place Oct. 13, 1934 against Grove City. The Rock are 58-26-4 in their 88 Homecoming games all-time. Indiana will be the Homecoming opponent for the 18th time, which is the most of all SRU opponents (Edinboro is second at 14 times). The Rock have won their last three Homecoming games and are 5-1 in their last six and 17-4 in their last 21 Homecoming games.
Â
HOMECOMING GAMES AGAINST IUP
This will mark the 18th SRU Homecoming game against Indiana with both teams owning an 8-8-1 record in the previous 17 meetings. This is the first time SRU will host IUP on its Homecoming since 2021, when IUP cruised to a 48-21 win. The Hawks have been the Homecoming opponent only three times since 1995 with all three coming since 2017. Both of the last two SRU losses on Homecoming were against IUP (2021 and 2017), which were sandwiched by an SRU win over IUP on Homecoming in 2019.
Â
NO MORE ROOM FOR ERROR
With back-to-back one-possession losses to Cal (Pa.) and Gannon, Slippery Rock's NCAA postseason streak is now in serious jeopardy. The Rock will most likely have to win out the rest of the way and could still need help to extend their playoff streak to seven straight years. SRU entered this fall with the second longest active playoff streak in the country at six straight years, trailing only the 10 straight appearances by Ferris State.
Â
ONLY THREE REGULAR SEASON LOSSES SINCE 2022
Slippery Rock has only lost three times in the regular season since 2022 with losses to California in 2024 and 2025 and now a loss to Gannon in 2025. The Rock are 23-3 in the regular season since the beginning of the 2023 season with the only losses in 2023 coming in the PSAC championship game and the NCAA quarterfinals and the only other loss in 2024 coming in the national semifinals.
Â
FIVE PSAC WEST LOSSES SINCE 2017
Slippery Rock has lost just five PSAC Western Division games since Oct. 21, 2017 and is 41-5 against the Division since then, including 38-3 over six full seasons (2018-24) with five PSAC West titles over that stretch. The Rock have won or at least shared nine of the 13 PSAC West titles dating back to 2011, easily leading all programs in the Division. SRU head coach
Shawn Lutz is 43-8 against the PSAC West in the last seven seasons and 46-12 against the Division in his career as head coach.
Â
0-2 IN THE PSAC WEST
After nearly a decade of dominance in the PSAC West, Slippery Rock opened the year 0-2 in the division standings. The last time SRU was 0-2 to start PSAC West play was early in the 2001 season, before all but five current SRU players were even born.
Â
TWO PSAC WEST LOSSES IS RARE FOR SRU
Slippery Rock was 18-2 in PSAC West games over the last three seasons entering this fall (2022-24,) but is off to a 1-2 start this year. The last time The Rock lost two PSAC West games in the same season was the 2017 season when SRU went 5-2 in the division. From 2018-24, SRU went 38-3 against the PSAC West and is now 41-5 in its last 46 PSAC West games dating back to the last two weeks of the 2017 season.
Â
LAST SEASON WITH TWO REGULAR SEASON LOSSES
At 4-2 overall, The Rock have already dropped a pair of regular season games, which marks the first time since 2017 that SRU has lost two regular season games in a single season. The Rock lost three regular season games in 2017 and finished with an 8-3 overall record.
Â
OFFENSIVE RANKS
Slippery Rock enters this week ranked No. 1 in the PSAC in total offense (449.2 yards per game) and No. 1 in the PSAC in rushing offense (252.8 yards per game). The Rock rank seventh nationally in rushing, 17th in total offense and 16th nationally in scoring offense (37.2 points per game).
Â
JORDAN LEADS PSAC / AMONG NCAA LEADERS
Through six games, RB
JayJay Jordan leads all players in the PSAC in every rushing statistic and all-purpose yardage with his 892 rushing yards, 138 receiving yards and 198 kickoff return yards stacking up to 1,228 all-purpose yards. Jordan ranks. No. 2 among all players in Division II this year in all-purpose yards per game (204.7) and rushing yards per carry (9.2) while ranking No. 3 nationally in both total rushing yards (892) and rushing yards per game (148.7).
Â
BIG GAMES FOR JORDAN
RB
JayJay Jordan has rushed for more than 100 yards in five of six games this year and is coming off a trio of huge performances the last three weeks. He put up 323 all-purpose yards against Cal, ran for 247 yards against Gannon and then ran for 189 yards on just 13 carries against Seton Hill. He ranks No. 1 and No. 2 in the PSAC in single-game all-purpose yards this year and his 247 rushing yards against Gannon are the seventh-most in a game in Division II this year.
Â
HARRISON TOUCHDOWNS IN BACK-TO-BACK GAMES
RB
Quentin Harrison broke through with his first career rushing TD two weeks ago at Gannon and followed that up last week with his second career TD at Seton Hill. Harrison is averaging 6.0 yards per carry and 52.2 yards per game while splitting carries with
JayJay Jordan.
Â
300+ RUSHING YARDS IN TWO STRAIGHT
Slippery Rock has run for at least 374 yards in two straight games to mark the first time since 2015 that The Rock has put together at least two games with 300+ rushing yards in the same season. SRU ran for 374 yards against Gannon and 410 yards against Seton Hill, which was just 46 yards shy of the program's single-game record of 456 yards. It marked the first time since Sept. 12, 2015 against East Stroudsburg (414 yards) that an SRU team ran for 400+ yards in a game.
Â
OWENS BOUNCES BACK AT SETON HILL
QB
DaOne Owens had his strongest all-around game of his young career last week at Seton Hill, rushing for 79 yards and three touchdowns and throwing for 131 yards with one TD with no interceptions. Owens, who made just his fourth career start last week, has now run for 171 yards and five TD while throwing for 857 yards with 10 TD and three INT in his redshirt freshman season. He took over as the starting QB at SRU entering week three and is 2-2 as a starter.
Â
FOUR STARTS BY A FRESHMAN QB AT SRU
QB
DaOne Owens is the first freshman or redshirt freshman QB at Slippery Rock to start at least four games in his freshman season since Nate Crookshank, who won the job in 2004 and held it four years through 2007. Crookshank and SRU Hall of Famer Randy McKavish (1997-00) were the last two freshmen QBs to win the job in their freshman season and start all four years at SRU.
Â
ONE CATCH, ONE TD
Backup TE
Christian Werling, a true freshman that began the year fifth on the depth chart, caught his first career pass last week at Seton Hill with a four-yard TD grab. Werling is the eighth SRU player on this year's roster to score his first SRU touchdown this fall.
Â
SUTTON SHOWING BIG PLAY ABILITY
WR
Latrell Sutton ranks second in the PSAC and 12th among all players in Division II in receiving yards per catch with an average of 22.92 yards per reception. Sutton has four TD catches on the year and leads SRU in total receiving yards with 298.
Â
RECEIVERS SHARING THE BALL
A total of 10 different players have caught a pass this year with five players having double digit receptions.
Joe White has 19 catches and 287 yards to go along with a punt return touchdown.
Latrell Sutton (13-298-4) and
John Sabo (12-177-4) are tied for the team lead with four TD catches each, while
JayJay Jordan (12-138-2) and
Carson Heckathorn (10-44-0) each have 10+ catches as well.
Reggie Fleurima (6-92-1) was becoming a bigger part of the offense until an injury sidelined him for the last three weeks.
Â
CAIN STEPPING UP
LB
Tyler Cain was thrust into a starting role two weeks ago when both of SRU's starting linebackers in their 4-2-5 defense,
Jacob Snow and
Teddy Gregory Jr., were injured. Snow and Gregory have not dressed for each of the last two weeks and with them out, Cain has stepped up and led SRU in tackles each week. He tallied nine tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss last week and is up to fifth on the team in total tackles with 26 stops, 3.5 tackles for loss, one interception and one blocked punt.
Â
BARNINGER STEPS INTO STARTING ROLE
With Snow and Gregory both out, SRU started true freshman
Troy Lucas two weeks ago, but Lucas was also injured in the first half at Gannon, which paved the way for true freshman
Spencer Barninger to see his first action. Barninger made his first career start last week at Seton Hill and tallied seven total tackles and a half-TFL to help the SRU defense limit the Griffins to just seven points.
Â
EDGE RUSHERS GETTING HOME
DE
Brian Young Jr. and DE
Elijah Halley have combined for 14.5 tackles for loss and 9.0 sacks with both men having 4.5 sacks on the year. Halley has started two games for the injured
Brett Kwoka, who had three fumble recoveries in the first three games of the season.
Â
DEFENSE RESPONDS AT SETON HILL
After allowing 83 combined points in losses to Cal (45-38) and Gannon (38-35), The Rock defense cleaned things up in a big way last week at Seton Hill, holding the Griffins to just seven points and 217 total yards of offense. Slippery Rock has allowed 48 total points combined in its four wins, including a 42-0 shutout over Shippensburg, but allowed 83 points in its two losses.
Â
17 PLAYERS ON INJURY LIST LAST WEEK
Slippery Rock has been hit by the injury bug in a big way early this season with a total of 17 players being forced to miss last week's game against Seton Hill. Some of those players, like starting RT
Jake Jonassen and DT
Daniel Tooson, have missed every game this season. Others, like starting linebackers
Jacob Snow and
Teddy Gregory Jr., starting defensive end
Brett Kwoka and starting tight end
Carson Heckathorn, have missed the last two weeks.
Â
FRESHMEN GETTING EXPERIENCE FAST
With all the injuries piling up, Slippery Rock has played a growing number of freshmen and redshirt freshmen in key roles this year. That group includes QB
DaOne Owens, rotating right tackles
Luke Caldwell and
Varrius Farrell, tight ends
Lou Swartz and
Christian Werling, linebackers
Troy Lucas,
Spencer Barninger and
John Frangos, safety
Carmen Metcalfe and kicker
Nathan Pfennigwerth.
Â
YOUNG TEAM TO BUILD AROUND
After losing most of its starting lineup entering this year, Slippery Rock was eyeing a potential rebuilding year for the program. Entering this week, a total of 21 players listed as starters or backups on the SRU two-deep are in either their first or second year of eligibility. Additionally, 16 more players on the two-deep are in their third year of eligibility and have at least one more season left. Only five total starters on the offense and defense this week are in their senior seasons of eligibility (WR
Xander McClure, OL
Joe Cooper, OL
Eli Podgorski, DB
Joshua Hayes, DB
Michael Henwood).
Â
ROBERTS MOVES UP CAREER PAT LIST
PK
Kevin Roberts booted seven more PAT kicks last week to improve to 31-of-31 on the season and extend his career total to 95 made PAT kicks. That moves him up to ninth all-time at SRU and brings him to within five made PAT kicks of becoming the eighth kicker at SRU to make at least 100 PAT kicks in a career.
Â
CAPTAINS
Slippery Rock has named four captains for the 2025 season with the team voting for two offensive players and two defensive players to serve as captains. The offensive captains are quarterback
Anthony Vespo and offensive tackle
Joe Cooper, while the defensive captains are safety
Michael Henwood and linebacker
Jacob Snow.
Â
COOPER NAMED TO EAST-WEST SHRINE BOWL WATCHLIST
SRU left tackle
Joe Cooper picked up a high honor entering this fall when he was named as one of just 10 players in Division II on the East-West Shrine Bowl Watchlist. Cooper, at 6-foot-7 and 320 pounds, has already received visits from multiple NFL teams.
Â
COOPER AND KWOKA ON D2 ELITE 100 LIST
Slippery Rock landed two players on the D2football.com Elite 100 list entering this season with left tackle
Joe Cooper and defensive lineman
Brett Kwoka both being recognized.
Â
WINNING SEASONS STREAK
Slippery Rock has put together a winning season in each of the last 15 years, which ranks ninth among all Division II programs for the longest active winning seasons streak in the country. The only other program in the PSAC with more consecutive winning seasons currently is California (Pa.), which has strung together 20 winning seasons entering 2025.
Â
DIVISION II PLAYOFF CHANGES
Division II football underwent a regional realignment this year with Conference Carolinas adding football. The division also expanded the playoff field from 28 teams to 32 teams, with each Super Region set to get eight teams in this year and the No. 1 seeds no longer receiving a first-round bye. Super Region One is now all schools in the PSAC, the Mountain East Conference (MEC), the Northeast-10 Conference (NE10) and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). The champions in each league will earn an automatic bid, while four other at-large selections will fill out the regional bracket.
Â
UP NEXT
Slippery Rock will have a bye week next week with a hole in the schedule that was created last year when Mercyhurst departed the PSAC. The Rock will fill that void again beginning next year and will return to an 11-game regular season. SRU's next game is set for Nov. 1 at home against Clarion with kickoff on Senior Day set for 1 p.m.
