Rock slips to No. 25 in national poll

Slippery Rock dropped one spot to No. 25 in this week's Division II national rankings released Monday by the American Football Coaches Association.

WACO, Texas – The Slippery Rock University football team slid one spot to No. 25 in the NCAA Division II national rankings after the American Football Coaches Association released its updated national poll Monday.

The Rock extend their ranked streak that began 2,492 days ago and have now been nationally ranked in every poll released since the final poll of the 2018 season.

Slippery Rock, which won 49-7 on the road Saturday at Seton Hill, slipped to No. 25 after being in a three-way tie for No. 24 last week.

The top five in this week's poll were unchanged. Defending national champion Ferris State remained atop the poll with all 31 first place votes, while Harding remained second, West Florida remained third and Kutztown stayed at No. 4. Western Colorado stayed at No. 5.

Two teams dropped out of the top 10 to create a little movement near the top of the poll with the rest of the top 10 consisting of Augustana at No. 6, Grand Valley State at No. 7, West Alabama at No. 8, Colorado State Pueblo at No. 9 and Central Washington at No. 10.

Kutztown and Slippery Rock are the only two PSAC teams to be ranked in the top 25 this week after California (Pa.) dropped out of the poll after falling in back-to-back weeks to Seton Hill and Edinboro. The Vulcans are the second team outside the top 25 this week receiving 27 points in the voting. Indiana (Pa.), which had a bye week last week before traveling to SRU this week, is the only other PSAC team mentioned in the "others receiving votes" section of the poll.

No. 14 Virginia Union of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association and No. 23 Johnson C. Smith of the CIAA round out the four Super Region One teams in this week's top 25.

Frostburg State (Mountain East Conference), Charleston (MEC) and Assumption (Northeast 10) join California (Pa.) and Indiana (Pa.) in the "others receiving votes" section of the poll to give Super Region One nine teams mentioned in this week's poll.

Slippery Rock will host Indiana (Pa.) Saturday at 1 p.m. on Homecoming in a game that carries major postseason implications for both teams. An IUP win Saturday puts the Crimson Hawks in the driver's seat in the PSAC West. An IUP win would also mark the third regular season loss for SRU and likely end any chances of a seventh straight NCAA Playoff bid. A Rock win Saturday would give IUP it's second overall loss and send the PSAC West standings into a frenzy with nearly every team in the division still alive. It would also leave the three traditional heavyweights in the division, SRU, Cal and IUP, all with at least two losses entering the final month of the regular season, giving the other teams in the division a chance to upset the status quo. The last time a team other than SRU, Cal or IUP represented the West in the PSAC title game was 2010 when Mercyhurst won the division.

A look at the updated AFCA national poll can be found below. This week's D2football.com poll is available HERE and does not include any PSAC teams other than Kutztown this week.
