Rock tops California, 3-0

Behind a brace from Gabin Lonjard, the Slippery Rock men’s soccer team cruised past California (Pa.),3-0, in PSAC West competition Saturday at James Egli Field.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Behind a brace from Gabin Lonjard, the Slippery Rock University men's soccer team cruised past California (Pa.), 3-0, in PSAC West competition Saturday at James Egli Field.
 
With the win, Slippery Rock improved to 4-5-1 overall and 2-2-0 in the PSAC West, while California fell to 2-7-1 with a 0-4-0 PSAC West mark.
 
Lonjard put home two first half goals, followed by Kaden Reynolds adding an insurance goal in the second half. Zsombor Retfalvi, Aashi Pandher and Massimo Cuda all grabbed one assist in the win.
 
Troy Nine started his third game of the season and improved his record to 2-1-0 with a three-save shutout, his second clean sheet of 2025.
 
It did not take long for SRU to open the scoring as Lonjard was sent streaking down the left wing off a pass from Retfalvi. Lonjard beat the Vulcans defender with his speed and slotted home the opening goal with his left foot into the far corner, giving SRU a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute.
 
Slippery Rock quickly doubled its lead in the 14th minute with Lonjard's second goal of the game. Pandher sent in a cross from the right wing that found Lonjard in the middle of the 18-yard box and he shot the ball off the volley past the goalkeeper, giving The Rock a 2-0 advantage.
 
SRU took a 6-3 edge in shots and 2-0 advantage in shots on goal into halftime.
 
Slippery Rock sealed its win with a third goal in the 70th minute from Reynolds. Cuda controlled the midfield before sending a through ball to the right wing and Reynolds took the pass before completing the finish off his right foot, giving SRU a 3-0 lead.
 
Slippery Rock finished the contest with a 19-10 advantage in shots and 7-3 in shots on goal, closing out its 3-0 victory.
 
With the win, Slippery Rock head coach Kevin Wilhelm is now in sole possession of fourth place on SRU's all-time wins list.
 
Slippery Rock finishes its three-game homestand with a non-conference tilt against Daemen University 3 p.m. Oct. 15 at James Egli Field.
