Rock storms past Edinboro with 6-0 road win

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team bounced back into the win column by posting a convincing 6-0 victory over Edinboro Wednesday on the road.

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team bounced back into the win column by posting a convincing 6-0 victory over Edinboro Wednesday on the road.

The Rock improved to 2-2-2 on the year and moved above .500 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play with a 2-1-1 record. The Fighting Scots fell to 1-3-2 overall and 1-3 in PSAC West competition.

The six-goal victory marked Slippery Rock's largest margin of victory since rolling to a 7-0 win against Clarion Sept. 8, 2021, a span of 60 games. The win is also SRU's largest road victory since a 7-0 win at Mansfield University in 2017.

SRU's win additionally went down as the program's largest win over Edinboro in school history, a series that now includes 42 meetings dating back to 1996.

Slippery Rock's six goals came from as many goalscorers: Libby Zacharyasz (15'), Sophia Palermo (37'), Faith Diffenbacher (51'), Bailey McGee (60'), Morgan Sarver (73') and Olivia Yoder (88').

The Rock saw three assists come from Sydney Patrick, who became the eighth different player to total at least three assists in the same game in school history.

On top of her first career goal, McGee also earned an assist. True freshman Kierstyn Maxey found the first point of her career in the win with an assist as well.

Sarver and Zacharyasz both led SRU with four shots, as Zacharyasz was able to place three of her attempts on net. Skylar Munnikhuysen amassed two shots for SRU with five players each tacking on one shot: Diffenbacher, McGee, Patrick, Yoder and Maddie DeLucio.

Leah Allman made three saves in her eighth career shutout.

Zacharyasz buried the game's first goal in the 16th minute at the far post on a perfect free kick cross from McGee and Patrick. The Rock continued to apply pressure until the lead doubled to 2-0 in the 37th mark. Palermo came away with a breakaway from a melee outside the box following a corner, shimmying past the keeper to find the open net.

Palermo saw two more opportunities in the first half alone, hitting the post twice after a 41st-minute corner. As a result, SRU's 2-0 lead remained as such through the opening 45 minutes.

Diffenbacher headed in a corner kick 5:02 into the second half, giving Slippery Rock a 3-0 advantage and granting Patrick her second assist of the contest.

The woodwork denied Sarver a goal on a beautiful curl toward the net in the 57th minute, but the play did set up a corner kick opportunity for SRU. The Rock retained possession, allowing McGee to line up a scorcher of a shot from outside the 18 that turned into her first career goal.

Sarver got her redemption in the 73rd minute by putting SRU up 5-0. Maxey sent a long through-ball into traffic with Sarver able to loop in the left-footed shot past Edinboro's keeper.

The Rock piled on one more goal for good measure with 2:38 left in the game when Yoder finished off a fast-moving cross from Patrick.

Beyond the 6-0 victory, Slippery Rock weighed down its side of the box score with advantages in shots (18-8), shots on goal (9-3) and corner kicks (7-4).

Madison Felton led the Fighting Scots with two shots. Edinboro starting goalkeeper Sandra Malave made one save through the opening 70 minutes before being relieved by Kaylee Lauriel, who made two stops in the final 20:43.

Slippery Rock will look to keep its offense rejuvenated when it wraps up September soccer with a 1 p.m. kickoff at Clarion Saturday.
