SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team lost a non-conference game to Newberry College, 1-0, Sunday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
Following Sunday's result, Slippery Rock's record drops to 2-3 overall while the visiting Wolves remain undefeated at 6-0.
Leslie Colliver came off the bench to supply the majority of The Rock's offensive chances with a game-high three shots, one of which was on target.
Supplementing Colliver on the attack with one shot apiece was
Gianna Conti,
Madison Shomo,
Christina Clymer,
Haley Metcalf and
Hilary Hoffman. The attempts by Conti, Clymer and Metcalf were all shots on goal.
Defensively, Slippery Rock yielded just three shots on goal for the duration of Sunday's game. Goalkeeper
Grace Burker played a full 60 minutes for SRU, making two saves.
Sunday's game was largely a defensive battle. While Newbery held the edge in possession, Slippery Rock's defense was able to thwart nearly every attempt by the Wolves by successfully clearing 11 of Newberry's 12 penalty corners.
The decisive moment of the contest came four minutes into the second quarter when Newberry was awarded a penalty corner that ultimately led to Stembile Chikoore beating Burker for what turned out to be the game's lone goal.
Following Newberry's score, an attempt from Colliver was stopped by Kyla Cooke in the 23rd minute to send the game into halftime with the Wolves maintaining the advantage.
The Rock's best chance at a game-tying goal in the second half came in the final minute as SRU drew a pair of penalty corners which led to attempts by Clymer, Metcalf and Colliver.
However, Cooke turned away the shots by Clymer and Metcalf while Colliver's final attempt of the day was blocked as time expired to give Newberry the one-goal victory.
For the game, Newberry held advantages over SRU in total shots (10-8) and penalty corners (12-5) while Slippery Rock edged NC in shots on goal (4-3).
Slippery Rock opens the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference portion of its 2024 schedule 1 p.m. Sept. 28 at No. 6 West Chester University.
