WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team lost to No. 5 West Chester University, 6-2, on the road Saturday in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opener.
Following Saturday's result Slippery Rock's record moves to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in league play while the nationally ranked Golden Rams improve to 7-2 overall and 1-0 inside the PSAC.
Hazara Sandhu led The Rock Saturday as the first-year transfer from York recorded one goal and one assist for her first multi-point performance at SRU.
Gianna Conti added her team-leading fourth goal of the season as well to round out SRU's top offensive performers.
Aiding Slippery Rock's attack with one shot on goal apiece was the duo of
Leslie Colliver and
Madison Shomo.
On a day in which The Rock's defense faced constant pressure in the form of 31 West Chester attempts – 17 of which were on target - goalie
Grace Burker made 11 saves.
WCU posted six consecutive goals to open the game with one in the first quarter, three in second and two more to start the second half in the third quarter. SRU avoided the shutout thanks to a Conti goal in the 50th minute and Sandhu's first goal in a Rock uniform at 52:02.
For the game, West Chester held advantages over The Rock in total shots (31-4), shots on goal (17-4) and penalty corners (15-0). Jasmine Miller picked up a hat trick for WCU in the victory.
Slippery Rock returns home to host Indiana University (Pa.) 4 p.m. Oct. 1 at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium on International Students Day.
