Rock loses at No. 2 Shippensburg

The Slippery Rock field hockey team lost a non-conference game on the road Saturday at No. 2 Shippensburg.

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. The Slippery Rock University field hockey team lost a non-conference game on the road Saturday at No. 2 Shippensburg University, 10-1.

The loss drops The Rock's record to 2-2 overall while the nationally ranked Raiders, which defeated No. 1 Kutztown University earlier in the week, remains undefeated at 6-0.

Slippery Rock was led in the defeat by Grace Williams, who came off the bench to net her first collegiate goal. Leslie Colliver assisted on Williams' strike for what was her 36th career point, moving her into a tie with Bailee Christman and Deb Smith for 15th place on SRU's career points ledger.

Gianna Conti, Christina Clymer and Hilary Hoffman all registered shots as well with the tries by Conti and Clymer being on target attempts.

Grace Burker played all 60 minutes and stopped 14 shots - the second highest single-game save total of the senior's career.

Burker made three saves early in the first quarter before the high-scoring Shippensburg offense broke through with an Agus Garibaldi goal in the fourth minute. The Raiders went on to add another first-quarter goal followed by two more in the second period on the way to a 4-0 lead going into the halftime break.

The remainder of the game saw the Raiders tack on four goals in the third quarter and two in the final 15 minutes while SRU avoided the shutout thanks to Williams' goal in the 56th minute to trim The Rock's final deficit to nine goals.

Shippensburg ended the day holding advantages over The Rock in total shots (36-4), shots on goal (24-3) and penalty corners (14-2). Garibaldi, Anne Gardner and Valu Paul scored two goals apiece to lead Shippensburg.

Slippery Rock returns home to close the weekend with a 12 p.m. Sunday non-conference game against Newberry College at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
