Rock to celebrate 50th anniversary of 1972-74 football teams

Slippery Rock will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its 1972-74 football teams that won three straight PSAC titles during The Rock football team's regular season finale Nov. 16.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1972-74 football teams that won three consecutive conference titles Nov. 16 during The Rock's final regular season home game.

Members of the football teams from 1972, 1973 and 1974 are invited to attend the event and should save the dates Nov. 15-16 on their calendars as both days will include social events for the team.

More details and registration information will follow in the coming weeks.

Tentative plans include an informal social Friday evening, Nov. 15 with a full day of events set for Saturday, Nov. 16. The Saturday events are expected to include a pregame tailgate reception at the SRU Ski Lodge, recognition for the attendees during The Rock's home football game at 1 p.m. and an evening celebration at the Ski Lodge.

Slippery Rock will celebrate a dominant three-year run that began in 1972 and concluded in 1974 with three straight PSAC titles. The Rock teams coached by Bob DiSpirito won 25 games over that three-year run with at least eight wins in each of the three seasons. SRU took down West Chester in all three of those state championship games, winning at home in 1972 and 1974 and winning on the road in 1973.

More information and registration information for members of those teams will be shared in the coming weeks.
