EMPORIA, Kan. – Slippery Rock University senior distance runner
Anna Igims earned first team All-America honors with a seventh place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Division II National Championships Friday evening from Emporia State University.
Â
Igims becomes the first female steeplechase runner in Slippery Rock history to earn All-America honors and the first SRU female athlete to earn All-America honors in a track event since 2011.
Â
"I'm so proud of the way Anna raced the last two days and couldn't be happier to see her rewarded for all of her efforts this year by earning All-America honors," said
Bobby Over, SRU distance coach. "We had to race an extra week we weren't originally planning so she could guarantee a spot in this field and she bounced back from that with two great races this week."
Â
Igims earns her first career All-America honors after placing seventh in the finals of the event Friday evening with the second-fastest time of her career, 10:27.68.
Â
The top eight finishers in each event are recognized as first team All-Americans by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Â
Igims closes out a stellar year that began back in the fall with the cross country season and carried over into both the indoor and outdoor track seasons. She was first team All-PSAC and All-Region in cross country and was named the Most Outstanding Track Athlete in the PSAC at both the indoor and outdoor conference championship meets. She also earned one of the 23 women's NCAA Division II 50th Anniversary Scholarships that were just announced by the NCAA earlier this week.
Â
She plans to return to SRU for graduate school next year and has one season of eligibility remaining in all three seasons.
Â
Igims was the lone SRU athlete competing Friday on the second day of the National Championships.
Sarah Corrie and Joshua Gose will throw the shot put Saturday and Drew Layton will compete in the pole vault to close out the meet.
