CHARLESTON, W. Va. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team lost a non-conference road match to No. 38 University of Charleston, 6-1, Saturday.

The loss drops The Rock's record to 6-6 overall while the nationally ranked Golden Eagles improve to 10-4. Of SRU's six losses, two have come against Division I teams while three others have been versus teams in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings.

Saturday's match started promising for The Rock as SRU earned the team doubles point thanks to wins in the first and third flights.

SRU's top doubles pairing of Nicole Kempton and Amaia Balaguer Brau opened the match with a 6-2 victory over Sofiia Krasikova and Prinkle Singh.

Following a 6-2 loss by Georgie Lancaster and Gabriela del Val del Toro to Filippa Larsson and Michelle Connor in the second flight, Slippery Rock ensured itself of the doubles point when Tina Slovak and Dari Sakhanova downed Sara Martinez and Harriet Glaves 6-3 from the third slot.

Slovak and Sakhanova have now won three straight matches while Balaguer Brau and Kempton are 6-6 on the year after taking four of their last six bouts.

However, Slippery Rock was unable to carry over its doubles momentum into the singles portion of the match as the Golden Eagles captured wins in all six flights for the comeback win.

In a meeting between nationally ranked athletes, No. 55 Singh defeated No. 59 Balaguer Brau 6-1, 6-3 for the match tying point followed by wins for Charleston in back half of the singles rotation where Martinez bested Slovak from the fifth flight (6-2, 6-4) and Hondiasvilli downed Lancaster (6-3, 6-4) in the sixth flight.

Krasikova clinched the team victory for UC when she edged del Val del Toro in second-flight action 6-4, 6-4.

The day ended with a pair of three-set matches. Conner narrowly got the best of Kempton in the fourth flight 5-7, 7-6, 6-1 while Larsson earned a tight 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win in the third slot against Sakhanova.

Slippery Rock is scheduled to return to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division competition 4 p.m. April 9 at Seton Hill University.
