SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's track & field team won 11 events while recording 32 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks and two NCAA provisional marks at the John Papa Invitational hosted by SRU Thursday.
Â
The Rock had arguably their best overall meet of the season with the highlights coming from a pair of senior throwers.
Sarah Corrie and
Tiffany Jolayemi both uncorked season-best efforts to vault themselves up the national lists in their respective events.
Â
Corrie won the shot put with an NCAA provisional mark and a new career-best effort of 14.62 meters. That mark moves her up to No. 14 on the Division II leaderboard this spring. She won the event in a field that featured all five of the best shot put throwers in the PSAC this season, including three of her teammates that finished in the top five.
Becca Martin was third at 13.26 meters, followed by
Olivia Heckman in fourth at 13.20 meters and
Savannah Schneck in fifth at 13.11 meters.
Â
Jolayemi nearly broke her own school record in the hammer throw with an NCAA provisional toss of 54.17 meters, just missing her SRU record (54.20m) that she set last spring. That effort moves her up to No. 13 on the Division II leaderboard this spring. She was joined by Schneck, who took fifth with a toss of 45.29 meters.
Â
The Rock also won the javelin to take three of the four throwing events with
Isabella Bartoletti winning with a throw of 39.50 meters. Martin capped the PSAC qualifying throws with a fifth place finish in the discus with a throw of 38.12 meters.
Â
Slippery Rock won three of the four jumping events, including both horizontal jumps and the high jump.
Samantha Gilbert won the long jump with a season-best leap of 5.71 meters on a busy day in which she also won the 100-meter dash and ran legs of the winning 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays.
Baylee Blauser took second in the long jump at 5.53 meters and
Cassidy Davis was fourth at 5.41 meters.
Aleks Brozeski claimed the win in the triple jump with a leap of 11.45 meters and
Paige Griffith won the high jump with a clearance of 1.60 meters.
Julia Coffaro also locked up a spot at the PSAC meet with a third place showing in the high jump with a clearance of 1.55 meters.
Â
The Rock had four pole vaulters hit the PSAC standard to round out the top efforts in the field.
Allie Taylor and
Hanna Zeiler each cleared 3.60 meters to place seventh and eighth, while
Riley Murray and
Erica Buchheister both cleared 3.30 meters to lock up their spots at the PSAC meet.
Â
Gilbert won the 100-meter dash in 11.99 seconds and ran key legs of a pair of fast relays. She teamed with
Regan Johnson,
Layne Miller and
Lydia Reed to win the 4x100-meter relay in 46.93 seconds and then closed the day by teaming with
Alice Bogia,
Lorna Speigle and
Lydia Latimer to win the 4x400-meter relay in a season-best time of 3:53.87. Johnson took second in the 100m in 12.05 seconds and then picked up her own win in the 200-meter dash in 25.03 seconds. Reed and Miller tied for third with matching times of 25.74 seconds.
Annasophia Stauffer capped the PSAC marks in the sprints when she took third in the 400-meter dash in 59.16 seconds.
Â
SRU hit four PSAC marks in the hurdles with
Chaley Younkin and
Chalondra Clarke finishing second and third in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.83 seconds and 15.14 seconds.
Rachel Veneziano led the way in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:04.67 with Younkin taking seventh in 1:06.71.
Â
The Rock picked up four PSAC marks in the distance events with
Ruthie Hughes winning the 10,000-meter run in 38:21.21 to highlight the efforts.
Anna Igims was second in 38:22.41 after placing second in the 800-meter run earlier in the day in 2:18.31. Igims is now qualified for the PSAC Championships in five different events from 800 meters through 10,000 meters.
Jennifer Cichra rounded out the PSAC marks with a third place finish in the 1,500-meter run in 4:50.27.
