INDIANA, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team lost its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division opener on the road Monday to Indiana University (Pa.) at the Maple Street Courts on the campus of IUP.

Monday's loss moves The Rock's record to 6-5 overall and 0-1 in league matches while the Crimson Hawks improve to 5-8 overall and 1-0 inside the PSAC West.

SRU captured the first doubles result of the contest when Tina Slovak and Dari Sakhanova earned a 6-3 victory over Hannah Beitat and Veronica Sirci out of the third flight. Slovak and Sakhanova are now 2-0 when representing Slippery Rock at No. 3 doubles this season.

Slippery Rock was unable to earn the team doubles point as IUP proceeded to record matching 6-3 wins from the first and second flights. Ming Deewajee and Daniela Ramos bested Nicole Kempton and Amaia Balaguer Brau from the top flight while Lydia Vlachou and Katy Graydon defeated Gabriela del Val del Toro and Georgie Lancaster in the second flight.

Following a 6-1, 6-0 victory for Beitat against Lancaster in the sixth flight to begin the singles portion of match, Slovak provided The Rock with their first point via a 6-2, 7-5 triumph over Lina Teleshun in sixth-flight competition. Slovak's win improves her record to 7-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in dual matches.

However, Slippery Rock's comeback bid would end there as Deewajee defeated del Val del Toro (6-2, 6-4) in the first flight and Ramos beat Sakhanova (6-3, 6-1) in the match clinching decision out of the third flight.

With the team decision decided, the match ended with Kempton continuing her strong rookie season in the form of a 6-3, 6-3 win versus Vlachou in the fourth flight while Balaguer Brau was narrowly edged by Graydon in the second slot 7-6, 1-6, 1-0 (10-8).

Kempton is now 10-4 overall in 2023-24 and 8-3 in dual matches. She has posted victories in four of her last five outings.

Slippery Rock continues PSAC West competition with another road match 4 p.m. Wednesday at Clarion.
