Rock bests Goldey-Beacom, 6-1

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team earned a 6-1 non-conference victory over Goldey-Beacom Saturday for what was SRU’s fourth win in its last six matches.

SOUTH PARK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team earned a 6-1 victory over Goldey-Beacom College Saturday at the Glen Creek Tennis Club in South Park, Pennsylvania.
 
The non-conference win, SRU's fourth in its last six matches, improves The Rock's record to 6-4 overall in 2024. The Lighting drop to 2-12 following the loss.
 
With her individual wins at No. 2 doubles and No. 2 singles, Gabriela del Val del Toro increased her career victory total at The Rock to 126 matches which is tied for the seventh most in program history alongside former teammate Lois Page (2018-22).
 
del Val del Toro is now three wins away from tying Lacey Cohen (2016-21) for sixth on SRU's career wins ledger.
 
SRU quickly opened the match by capturing the team doubles point courtesy of wins out of the third and first flights.
 
The first result of the contest saw Dari Sakhanova and Tina Slovak record a 6-0 blanking of Macy Hendin-Walker and Hannah Brandl followed by a 6-2 victory from SRU's top doubles pairing of Amaia Balaguer Brau and Nicole Kempton against Elizabeth Mova and Zehra Canbaz.
 
del Val del Toro and Georgie Lancaster kept SRU's shutout bid of the Lighting intact via a close 7-6 (7-4) win from the second flight over Nahomi Quinonez and Jess Sanzo.
 
SRU went on to fire off five straight singles win to clinch the team victory.
 
Kempton gave SRU its first singles victory of the match by way of a 6-2, 6-0 showing against Sanzo in the fourth flight. She is 9-4 through 13 matches of her frshman year.
 
Slovak proceeded to maintain her perfect dual match record (4-0) in 2024 thanks to a 6-0, 6-2 triumph versus Brandl in sixth-flight competition.  
 
del Val del Toro officially clinched the team victory for The Rock, as well as increasing her personal winning streak to four matches, after downing Canbaz in second-flight action 6-2, 6-0.
 
The Rock went on to post wins out of the No. 3 and No. 1 flights as Sakhanova earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Quinonez and Balaguer Brau – the 49th ranked singles athlete in Division II – bested Mova 6-3, 6-3.

Balaguer Brau joined del Val del Toro as the second SRU athlete this season hit double-digit singles wins with her 10-7 overall record. Sakhanova meanwhile has captured wins in four of her last five finished matches.
 
The final singles bout of the day came from the fifth flight where Lancaster and Hendin-Walker traded set victories with Hendin-Walker capturing the opener 6-4 before Lancaster rallied for a 7-6 (7-4) victory in the second. The tiebreaker saw the evenly matched competitors continue to trade points with Hendin-Walker eventually eking out a tight 10-8 win.
 
Slippery Rock opens the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division portion of its 2024 schedule on the road against rival Indiana University (Pa.) 2 p.m. March 30.
