Rock loses to No. 19 Angelo State

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team wrapped up its spring break trip with a 5-2 loss to No. 19 Angelo State Friday at Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando, Florida.

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team wrapped up its spring break trip with a 5-2 loss to No. 19 Angelo State University Friday at Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando, Florida.
 
Slippery Rock closes its annual trip south with a 5-4 overall record after a week that included three matches against nationally ranked teams. Angelo State improves to 11-1 with its win.
 
The Rambelles swept the doubles portion of Friday's match before capturing four singles bouts for the team win.
 
The match started with back-to-back 6-1 victories for Angelo State out of the third and first flights as Mieke Van Deventer and Ivet Stancheva defeated Georgie Lancaster and Gabriela del Val del Toro while the 21st ranked pairing in the nation of Avery Durham and Eva Schwartz beat Amaia Balaguer Brau and Nicole Kempton.
 
The final completed doubles of match came from the second flight where Letizia Corsini and Ayda Guler downed Tina Slovak and Dari Sakhanova, 6-2.
 
While Angelo State was ultimately able to secure the team victory by taking four of the six singles matches, SRU did avoid a shutout courtesy of wins out of the second and sixth flights.
 
In second flight play, del Val del Toro rallied to beat Schwartz 2-6, 7-6, 1-0. del Val del Toro has now won three straight matches to improve to 10-5 on the season overall.
 
In her first singles match since Feb. 23, Slovak bested Durham 6-2, 6-3. In limited action this season, Slovak is 5-1 in singles matches including a perfect 2-0 mark from the sixth flight of dual matches.
 
The remainder of the singles matches saw No. 20 Corsini edge Balaguer Brau (6-4, 7-6), Jessica Li defeat Sakhanova (6-2, 6-4), Chrstine Jevicky better Kempton (6-1, 6-3) and Guler down Lancaster (6-2, 6-0).
 
Slippery Rock returns home to host Davis & Elkins College 3 p.m. March 21 at the SRU Tennis Courts.
