Rock stays fourth in Super Region One rankings

Slippery Rock stayed fourth in the final public set of Super Region One rankings when the NCAA Football Committee announced the updated regional rankings Monday.

Regional Rankings

INDIANAPOLIS – The Slippery Rock University football team stayed at No. 4 in the final public ranked-order list of Super Region One rankings unveiled Monday by the NCAA Division II Football Committee.

The Super Region One rankings will ultimately determine which seven teams from the region will qualify for the NCAA Division II Playoffs. The Rock's region includes all teams from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), the Mountain East Conference (MEC), the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) and the Northeast 10 Conference (NE10).

Unbeaten Charleston and Kutztown lead the rankings, followed by California (Pa.) and Slippery Rock rounding out the top four spots. Findlay, East Stroudsburg, New Haven, Ashland, Assumption and Bentley round out the rest of the top 10.

Today's rankings will be the final set of public rankings before the NCAA Football Committee unveils the playoff fields during a live video selection show Sunday evening at 6 p.m. at ncaa.com.

There are multiple factors taken into consideration to determine the playoff fields, including in-region winning percentage, winning percentage against Division II opponents, weighted strength of schedule, head-to-head competition, results against common opponents, results against teams above .500, results against ranked teams and the NCAA performance indicator. A regional committee considers all of that data before ranking 10 teams each week.

Entering week 11, Slippery Rock owns the fourth-highest performance indicator score in the region with only Charleston, Kutztown and California (Pa.) ranking higher. The Rock have a solid weighted strength of schedule number at .506, which is the second-highest strength of schedule among the six teams with one or fewer losses.

Slippery Rock is 1-1 on the season against teams in the top 10 in the region with a home victory over New Haven and a road loss at California. The Rock also have quality road wins at 6-3 Indiana (Pa.) and 5-5 Shepherd.

The top four teams in the final rankings will earn at least one home game in the NCAA Playoffs with the No. 1 seed earning a first-round bye. The top seven teams in the final ranking will earn a spot in the playoffs, unless any one of the four conferences in the region are not represented in the top seven. If that happens and the conference in question has a team ranked eighth or ninth, that team will move into the No. 7 seed via the "earned access" rule. The earned access would not apply if the field was set today as each conference has a team ranked in the top seven.

Slippery Rock is looking to lock up a sixth straight NCAA Playoff appearance after entering this season tied with Colorado School of Mines for the second-longest active playoff streak in Division II. Only Ferris State (9) had made more consecutive appearances entering this fall.

The Rock can guarantee themselves a spot in the postseason with a win in the regular season finale this week at home against Bloomsburg. Saturday's game is set for a 1:02 p.m. kickoff and will be televised live in the Youngstown, Ohio TV markets by WKBN-TV.
