Rock falls in three sets at Seton Hill

The Slippery Rock volleyball team lost a road PSAC match in three sets (26-24, 25-13, 25-16) Tuesday at Seton Hill. Erica Selfridge highlighted the night for The Rock by becoming the 11th athlete in program history to reach 1,000 career kills.

GREENSBURG, Pa. -  The Slippery Rock University volleyball team lost a road Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division match in three sets (26-24, 25-13, 25-16) Tuesday at Seton Hill.

Tuesday's loss drops The Rock's record 7-7 overall and 0-2 inside the PSAC while the Griffins improve to 11-2 overall and 2-1 in league matches.

The highlight of the night for SRU came from senior Erica Selfridge, who closed the contest with seven kills and in the process became just the 11th athlete in program history to eclipse the 1,000-kill plateau. Selfridge, who has now compiled 1,006 kills over her four-year career, also supplied SRU with eight digs and one block.

Lauren VonderHaar continued what's turning into a dominant junior campaign by recording five blocks in addition to five kills on an efficient .500 attack percentage. VonderHaar has now produced 19 blocks over The Rock's last three matches.

Callie Chevalier and Aslyn Pry joined Selfridge and VonderHaar on the attack with seven and kills, respectively, while Chevalier also notched a pair of blocks.

Jaeden Yost distributed 14 assists in addition to joining VonderHaar and Kate Lachendro-Biery as The Rock's top servers with one ace apiece. Lachendro-Biery also made a team-high 10 digs.

Slippery Rock could never quite find its collective stride offensively against the Griffins, finishing with an attack percentage of just .062. Seton Hill meanwhile posted a .259 attack percentage and 14 total blocks.

A 4-0 run midway through the first set gave Slippery Rock a five-point lead at 22-17 and forced the Griffins to take a timeout. However, SRU was unable to maintain its momentum following the break in action as SHU rallied back to eventually tie the opener at 23-23 en route to the 26-24 win.

The remainder of the night was largely controlled by the host Griffins which pulled away late in the second set for the 25-13 edge before finishing off the three-set sweep of The Rock by recording the final five points of the third set on the way to a match-deciding 25-16 victory.

Paige Cole ended the night with a match-high 12 kills while Catie Flohr went for 11 kills and eight blocks.

Slippery Rock returns to action 1 p.m. Saturday at California (Pa.) to finish off its season-opening 15-match road trip.
