COACHING MATCHUP
Slippery Rock head coach
Shawn Lutz is in his 29th overall year at The Rock and his ninth year (eighth season) as head coach, where he owns a 74-19 record with five PSAC West titles and five trips to the NCAA playoffs. Lutz was the PSAC West Coach of the Year in 2018, 2019 and 2023 and was the Don Hansen Football Gazette Division II National Coach of the Year in 2019. The 74 wins are the most among all PSAC head coaches since the 2016 season. Lutz was an assistant at SRU for 20 years before taking over the program in 2016. He has been a member of the coaching staff for 13 of SRU's 20 PSAC West titles. Lutz played tight end at West Virginia University, graduating in 1996, and earned a master's degree in sport management from SRU in 2003.
Â
Paul Tortorella got his education from his employer's biggest rival, graduating with a physical education degree from Slippery Rock in 1985. He never played football at The Rock. Tortorella, like Lutz, was a longtime assistant coach before taking over the reins of the program in 2017. He spent 22 seasons as an assistant, serving as the defensive coordinator from 1995-2016. Now in his eighth year (seventh season), Tortorella owns a 58-16 record as head coach and has led IUP to two PSAC West titles and three trips to the NCAA Playoffs.
Â
NATIONAL RANKINGS
Slippery Rock and IUP are both ranked in the AFCA and D2football.com national polls this week. The Rock are No. 9 in the AFCA and No. 10 in D2football.com. IUP is No. 21 in the AFCA and No. 24 in D2football.com. Both national polls are available on page nine of the PDF notes linked above.
Â

• Millersville transfer linebacker Garrett Cox, a first team All-American last year, leads the defense with 31 tackles along with Chuck Ingram, who has 34 stops. DL Maurice Feazell paces the line with 6.0 TFL and 4.5 sacks.
SRU IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
SRU has been ranked in every national poll since the final poll of the 2018 season was released. This week's game will be the 58th straight game SRU plays as a ranked team. The Rock have appeared in the top 10 in the national rankings for at least one week in each of the last five seasons and have earned a top 10 ranking in seven of the last eight complete seasons.
Â
11 OF THE LAST 12 PSAC WEST TITLES
SRU or IUP has won 11 of the last 12 PSAC West titles dating back to 2011. SRU has won nine of those with five outright titles and four co-titles and has represented the PSAC West in the conference championship game eight times since 2011. IUP has claimed three co-titles and one outright division title and has represented the West three times in the state game since 2011. California (once in 2016) is the only other PSAC West team to play in the state game since 2011.
Â
LOOKING FOR 5-0 START
Slippery Rock is looking for a 5-0 start for the fourth time in the last five seasons. The Rock were 4-0 in each of the last two seasons entering a week five game against IUP. The Crimson Hawks won the 2022 meeting before Slippery Rock claimed the 2023 meeting.
Â
LAST MEETING WITH IUP – SEPT. 30, 2023
No. 12 Slippery Rock jumped out to a 28-0 lead midway through the second quarter after scoring touchdowns on its first four possessions and led wire-to-wire for a 42-21 win over IUP in week five last year at The Rock. Both teams finished with more than 200 rushing yards, but the passing game favored SRU with the hosts throwing for 277 yards and no interceptions and IUP throwing for 131 yards with three interceptions. SRU put up 485 yards of offense and did not turn the ball over.
Brayden Long completed 18-of-23 passes for 277 yards and also rushed for one score.
Khalid Dorsey ran for 123 yards and three TD on just 15 carries and
Kyle Sheets caught five passes for 131 yards. IUP racked up 348 yards of offense with Karst Hunter completing 11-of-23 passes for 131 yards with no touchdowns and three picks. He also rushed for 88 yards and two scores on 14 carries. Dayjure Stewart ran for 89 yards and one TD. Â
Â
LAST WEEK FOR IUP
IUP cruised to a 31-0 win at home against Clarion last week and was never really challenged in the game. The Hawks outgained Clarion 426-114 after limiting Clarion to 21 rushing yards and 93 passing yards. Karst Hunter was 21-of-27 for 247 yards with two TD while also rushing for 61 yards and one score. Kaleb Monaco, a transfer RB from Bloomsburg, rushed for 71 yards and one score. Maurice Massey, a transfer WR from Southeastern Louisiana that began his career in 2019 at Missouri, caught six passes for 78 yards and one score.
Â
LAST WEEK FOR SLIPPERY ROCK
Slippery Rock jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the second quarter before not scoring the rest of the way and had to hold off a 23-point surge from Edinboro for a 28-23 win in the PSAC opener. The Rock had multiple miscues that led to points for Edinboro, including fumbling in their own end of the field and muffing a punt that was recovered at their own seven-yard line. Despite that, the defense allowed just 208 total yards and 3.6 yards per play. The offense sealed the game with an 88-yard drive that erased the final 9:18 off the clock to thwart any possible upset bids.
Brayden Long threw for 212 yards with two TD and one rushing TD.
Idris Lawrence rushed for 119 yards and
Chris D'Or ran for 51 yards and one TD.
Â
PSAC WEST OPENER
With a win last week, The Rock have now won their PSAC West opener in each of the last eight years and haven't lost the first divisional game since a 41-38 upset loss at Seton Hill in 2015.
Â
KINGS OF THE WEST
SRU is looking to defend its five straight PSAC West titles. The Rock have lost just two PSAC Western Division games since Oct. 21, 2017 and are 36-2 against the Division since then, including 34-2 since the beginning of 2018 with five straight PSAC West titles. The Rock have won or at least shared nine of the 12 PSAC West titles dating back to 2011, easily leading all programs in the Division. SRU head coach
Shawn Lutz is 39-4 against the PSAC West since 2017 and 42-8 against the Division in his career as head coach.
Â
REGULAR SEASON ROAD WARRIORS
The Rock have lost only one regular season road game in the last four plus seasons dating back to the beginning of the 2019 season. That lone loss came in week five of the 2022 season at Indiana (Pa.). Other than that, SRU's only road losses in the last five years have either been in the PSAC Championship game or the NCAA Playoffs. The Rock are 20-1 on the road in weeks 1-10 dating back to 2019.
Â
WINNING WITH DEFENSE
Slippery Rock has allowed just 47 total points this year with opponents averaging 11.8 points and 221.2 total yards per game. The level of competition has been high as well, with two wins over NCAA Playoff teams that are unbeaten this fall outside of their loss to SRU (New Haven and Shepherd). After SRU held New Haven to just seven points in the opener, the Chargers have scored at least 45 points in each of their next three games. Shepherd, which SRU limited to 10 points, is averaging 29.3 points in its other games.
Â
DEFENSIVE NATIONAL RANKINGS
Slippery Rock enters this week ranked No. 1 in Division II in third down defense with opponents converting just 17.0 percent of their third down attempts. The Rock rank in the top 20 nationally in total defense (eighth at 221.3 yards per game), scoring defense (13th at 11.8 points per game), rushing defense (15th at 73.8 yards per game), passing defense (18th at 147.5 yards per game), turnovers gained (12th at 10), passes intercepted (15th at six) and passing efficiency defense (16th at 100.42).
Â
YOUNG LINEBACKERS PLAYING WELL
Sophomore LB
Jacob Snow made his fourth career start last week and had the best game of his young career, leading SRU's defense with career-highs of eight tackles and 2.0 tackles for loss while also breaking up one pass and recording his first career interception. Through four games, Snow has 21 tackles, 3.0 TFL, one interception and one forced fumble. His starting counterpart, redshirt freshman
Teddy Gregory Jr., also has 21 tackles and 2,0 tackles for loss as that duo rank tied for second on the team in total tackles.
Â
MUNCHIE LEADS THE DEFENSE
DT
Munchie Johnson has started 43 straight games for The Rock and he seems to be getting better with age. His 43 career appearances rank 10th among all active players in Division II for the most career games played. Coming off a career year in 2023, Johnson added some bulk in the offseason and is off to a hot start again this fall. It's rare for a defensive tackle to lead the team in total tackles, but through four weeks, Munchie has done just that, leading SRU with 24 total tackles to go along with 5.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks and one fumble recovery.
Â
TODD HILL LEADS PSAC WEST
DE
Todd Hill is showing why he was a three-time All-Conference selection at Duquesne before transferring to Pitt last year. The grad student made the move from linebacker to defensive end and has been a menace for opposing offenses through four games. He leads all players in the PSAC West with an average of 1.88 tackles for loss per game. Hill has tallied 21 total tackles, 7.5 TFL, 3.0 sacks, five QB hurries and one safety through four games.
Â
DEFENSIVE LINE WINNING UP FRONT
DE
Todd Hill and DT
Munchie Johnson have combined for 13.0 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks in four games this year. In total, The Rock's defense has racked up 28 tackles for loss (7.0 per game) and seven sacks (1.75 per game) through four games. Last fall, SRU averaged 5.3 tackles for loss and just 1.1 sacks per game. DT
Trever Valenti moved into a starting role after an injury to
Daniel Tooson in the opener and has been getting better each week. Last week against Edinboro, he tallied a career-high seven tackles.
Â
SECONDARY TAKING THE BALL AWAY
SRU has two All-Americans in the secondary with cornerback
Josh Stokes and safety
Eddie Faulkner IV. Those two have combined with
Michael Henwood,
Ali Abdul-Hakim,
Pooh Lawton and
Donnell Henriquez to force eight of the 10 opposing turnovers through four weeks. Henwood has two picks and four pass breakups, Abdul-Hakim has one pick and one forced fumble, Faulkner has two pass breakups, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries, Lawton has one forced fumble and one INT, Henriquez has one INT and Stokes has a team-high five pass breakups to go with one fumble recovery.
Â
TURNOVER MARGIN
The Rock have turned the ball over just three times through four weeks with a lost fumble in the second half of the opener against New Haven and two lost fumbles, including a muffed punt, last week against Edinboro. SRU is one of just two teams in the PSAC to not throw an interception yet this year (SRU and Kutztown). Slippery Rock is +7 overall and ranks sixth in the nation in turnover margin at +1.75 per game. The Rock are 12th in the nation in turnovers lost (3) and 12th in the nation in turnovers gained (10) with six interceptions, four fumble recoveries, one defensive touchdown and one safety.
Â
OFFENSE STILL LOOKING FOR CONSISTENCY
The SRU offense is still looking to put together a 60-minute effort. The Rock's traditionally high-powered offense that ranked in the top 10 in nearly every category last year currently ranks outside the top 40 in Division II this fall in total offense (69th at 352.5 yards per game), passing offense (81st at 191.5 yards per game), rushing offense (49th at 161.0 yards per game), scoring offense (66th at 25.8 points per game), red zone offense (78th at 77.8 percent) and total first downs (46th with 82).
Â
SCORING OFFENSE IS DOWN EARLY THIS SEASON
The Rock enter this week averaging 25.8 points per game after averaging 40.9 points per game in 2023. The last time an SRU football team averaged less than 30.0 points per game was 12 seasons ago (29.4 in 2011). SRU averaged 25.6 points per game in 2010, which is the last time an SRU team had an average lower than the current 25.8 points per game.
Â
OFFENSIVE LINE GETTING THE JOB DONE
In addition to losing two receivers that each had 1,100 or more yards last year, SRU also lost four All-PSAC offensive linemen. The new-look offensive line was the biggest question mark entering this year. Through four weeks, SRU ranks fourth in Division II in sacks allowed at just 0.5 per game with a total of two sacks allowed through the first four games. SRU also ranks 14th nationally in tackles for loss allowed at just 4.00 per game. Much of that success is due to the men up front. The same group has started all four games and includes returning All-PSAC tackle
Joe Cooper (LT) and new starters
Marshall Futrell (LG),
Cade Cameron (C),
Luke Pugliese (RG) and
Nathan Waltman (RT). Waltman played tight end before this year, but gained 50 pounds in the offseason for his move to the offensive line.
Â
LONG CLOSING IN ON MILESTONES
QB
Brayden Long became the fourth player in SRU history with 400 career completions last week and enters this week with 411 completions despite only being in his second season as the starting QB. He is 61 yards of total offense away from becoming the fifth player in SRU history with 5,000 total yards of offense and he is 177 passing yards away from becoming the fifth player in SRU history with 5,000 passing yards. Despite only starting 19 games so far in his career, Long ranks fourth all-time at SRU in completions (411), sixth in attempts (608), sixth in TD passes (42), seventh in passing yards (4,823), fifth in total offense (4,939) and first in completion percentage (67.6%).
Â
LONG NAMED SEMIFINALIST FOR CAMPBELL TROPHY
QB
Brayden Long was announced last week as one of 18 Division II players to be named a national semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, known as the "Academic Heisman." Long is one of three semifinalists of the 203 total players from all levels with a perfect 4.0 GPA. The Campbell Trophy is the highest academic honor in football.
Â
"LONG" LIST OF AWARDS
QB
Brayden Long has racked up a long list of honors both on the field and in the classroom. He was the PSAC West and Super Region One Offensive Athlete of the Year, a Don Hansen All-American and a national finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy, finishing fifth in the final voting for the Division II Player of the Year last year. Long was the PSAC Champion Scholar Award winner for owning the highest GPA of all players in the PSAC title game, becoming the only player in PSAC history to be a Champion Scholar and an Athlete of the Year. He was also one of only two QBs in Division II to earn Academic All-America honors and closed his year by earning the NCAA Division II 50th Anniversary Scholarship and being named the overall PSAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He then picked up the Atlantic Region Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award from the D2CCA, becoming the only football player in the country to be one of the eight regional award winners. Long graduated in May with a perfect 4.0 GPA after earning a degree in sport management with a minor in leadership.
Â
LONG BY THE NUMBERS
Brayden Long is 16-3 as The Rock's starting QB and is the most accurate passer in program history, completing 68 percent of his passes (411-of-608) for 4,823 yards with 42 touchdowns and just six interceptions on 608 attempts. All three of the losses in Long's starting career have come against Kutztown. He is 16-0 in every other game he has started.Â
Â
FIRST 100-YARD RUSHING GAME THIS YEAR
SRU had its first 100-yard rusher this year when
Idris Lawrence went for 119 yards and averaged 7.9 yards per carry on 15 touches last week against Edinboro. It marked the first 100-yard rushing game by an SRU player since
Khalid Dorsey topped 100 against California (Pa.) Oct. 21 of last year. Lawrence had a 54-yard run last week, which was the longest rush by an SRU player since Dorsey broke off a 63-yard run against Cal in that same game last year.
Â
LAWRENCE THIRD AMONG ALL D2 BACKS
RB
Idris Lawrence enters this game with 3,386 career rushing yards, which ranks third among all active players in Division II and first among all active players in Super Region One. Lawrence is averaging 99.6 rushing yards per game over 34 career games, which ranks fifth among all players in Division II.Â
Â
D'OR GOES OVER 2,000 YARDS
RB
Chris D'Or became just the 18th player in SRU history to reach 2,000 rushing yards in a career earlier this season and comes into this week with 2,135 rushing yards and 3,226 career all-purpose yards. He needs 536 more rushing yards to crack the all-time top 10 at SRU and 470 more all-purpose yards to crack the top 10.
Â
RUNNING BACK TANDEM
Slippery Rock's running back duo of
Chris D'Or and
Idris Lawrence have combined for 604 rushing yards and 97 receiving yards through the first four weeks, accounting for 175.25 yards of offense per game. Lawrence is averaging 6.8 yards per carry on 48 touches with D'Or averaging 4.6 yards per carry on 60 touches. They both rank in the top 16 among all active Division II players in career yards per carry with Lawrence averaging 5.9 yards per carry his career to rank 10th in the country and D'Or averaging 5.5 yards per carry to rank 16th. Combined, they have rushed for 5,521 career yards at the Division II level.
Â
KRUZELYAK PASS CATCHING STREAK
TE
Kam Kruzelyak has caught at least one pass in 16 straight games and has multiple catches in 14 straight games. He ranked third on the team in catches with 46 grabs for 465 yards in 2023 and is third on the team with 12 catches for 133 yards and two scores this year.
Â
FIRST CAREER TD FOR CHRISMAN
Connor Chrisman made the second catch of his career last week and it happened to be a one-yard touchdown, marking the first touchdown of his career. Chrisman lined up as a tight end on the play, giving SRU three receiving touchdowns by tight ends so far this year, which is half of the team's passing scores.
Â
RAMPER SET TO MAKE SEASON DEBUT
SRU entered the year expecting top returning receiver
Logan Ramper to fill some of the void created by the graduation of All-American
Kyle Sheets, but Ramper has been sidelined with an injury since camp. He is on track to make his season debut this week, which could boost The Rock's productivity in the passing game. Last year, Ramper caught 32 passes for 417 yards with six touchdowns. His six TD grabs were second on the team in 2023, trailing only the 17 caught by Sheets.
Â
WILSON HAS CAREER-HIGHS
WR
Kylon Wilson is coming off career-highs of six catches for 92 yards last week against Edinboro, when he was the top receiver for The Rock. Wilson became the eighth player in SRU history with 1,000 or more kickoff return yards earlier this season. In less than two seasons, the sophomore is already up to No. 7 all-time at SRU with 1,033 return yards on just 36 kick returns. His 28.7 yards per return ranks No. 5 among all active players in Division II, No. 13 among all active college players from any level and No. 3 all-time at SRU.
Â
SCORING TRENDS
SRU is outscoring opponents 43-7 in the first quarter of games this year, building early leads and running out games. The Rock have scored a total of 76 points in the first half and just 27 total points in the second half of games through four weeks.
Â
LONG DRIVES AND TIME OF POSSESSION
SRU is averaging more than five minutes more per game of possession time than its opponents with The Rock holding the ball for 32:37 per game and opponents having it for 27:23. That time of possession advantage has been in part thanks to SRU's ability to put together long, sustained drives. The Rock started at their own 1-yard line with 9:18 to play last week and ran out the clock with an 88-yard drive to seal the win, which was the longest drive of the season. SRU has put together seven drives that lasted more than five minutes and five drives that lasted longer than six minutes so far in 2024.
Â
FLIPPING THE FIELD
Punter
Mason Yohn is off to a strong start in the punting game this fall, averaging 40.7 yards per punt on 16 kicks with eight punts inside the 20-yard line, five fair catches and one touchback. He has two kicks over 50 yards, including a career-long 57-yard punt against Shepherd.
Â
CAPTAINS
SRU has named six captains for the 2024 season with two on offense, three on defense and one on special teams. The offensive captains are QB
Brayden Long and TE
Kam Kruzelyak. The defensive captains are DT
Munchie Johnson, DB
Eddie Faulkner IV and DB
Josh Stokes. The special teams captain is LS
Josh George. Long, Kruzelyak and Johnson are all two-time captains after serving as captains in 2022 as well.
Â
PRESEASON RECOGNITION
Slippery Rock was ranked No. 10 in the Lindy's Sports preseason poll that was released earlier this summer. The Rock had three individual players mentioned in that publication with tight end
Kam Kruzelyak and cornerback
Josh Stokes being named preseason All-Americans and Notre Dame (Ohio) transfer running back
Idris Lawrence being named the "Newcomer of the Year." SRU also led all schools in the region with four players named to the D2football.com Elite 100 Watch List with QB
Brayden Long, RB
Idris Lawrence, WR
Rashawn Harvey and DB
Josh Stokes earning recognition.
Â
PLAYOFF STAPLES
Slippery Rock has reached the NCAA Division II Playoffs in each of the last five seasons and has made a playoff appearance in eight of the last 10 seasons. The Rock reached the NCAA quarterfinals in 2018, made the national semifinals in 2019, reached the first round in 2021, made the second round in 2022 and reached the quarterfinals in 2023. Slippery Rock's current streak of five straight trips to the playoffs is tied with Colorado School of Mines for the second-longest active streak among all Division II programs, trailing only Ferris State (9) for the longest active playoff streak in the country.
Â
WINNING SEASONS STREAK
Slippery Rock has put together a winning season in each of the last 14 years, which ranks ninth among all Division II programs for the longest active winning seasons streak in the country. The only other program in the PSAC with more consecutive winning seasons currently is California (Pa.), which has strung together 19 winning seasons entering 2024.
Â
WE'VE PLAYED A LOT OF FOOTBALL
Slippery Rock has played 71 games since the beginning of the 2018 season, which is the most games played among all Super Region One schools. The Rock are averaging an impressive 11.0 wins per year over the last five full seasons.
