SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University baseball program has announced plans to retire the jersey of former standout pitcher Lou Trivino.
Â
The ceremony will take place 6 p.m. Jan. 17 at the Capital Grille in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Limited seating at the event for any interested Slippery Rock alumni is available for reservation by contacting Slippery Rock head coach
Jeff Messer at 724.738.2813.
Â
Trivino, who wore No. 37 at SRU, starred at Slippery Rock from 2011-13. The Green Lane, Pennsylvania native started 35 games over his three-year career, going 19-9 with a 1.99 ERA and 217 strikeouts over 213 innings pitched.
Â
The program's all-time leader in shutouts with six, Trivino still ranks second in Slippery Rock history in career strikeouts, second in ERA, fourth in wins, fifth in innings pitched and sixth in complete games (14).
Â
In his collegiate career, Trivino was a three-time All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference selection, a three-time All-Atlantic Region honoree and a 2012 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-America choice.
Â
After being drafted by the Oakland Athletics with the 341st pick in the 11th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, Trivino spent parts of five seasons in the A's minor league system before being called up to the major league roster in 2018.
Â
Once making the majors, Trivino proceeded to pitch 263 innings over 261 games for the A's primarily out of the bullpen over the following five years. Trivino won 20 games with 36 saves, 50 holds and 277 strikeouts during his Oakland career prior to being traded to the New York Yankees at the 2022 trade deadline.
Â
As a member of the Yankees, Trivino pitched in 25 games through the conclusion of the 2022 regular season. He produced a 1.66 ERA, one win, one save and one hold out of New York's bullpen to help the Yankees win the American League Eastern Division title and ultimately advance all the way to the AL Championship Series.
Trivino, who is currently a free agent, missed all of last year due to injury, but will likely be back in an MLB bullpen for the 2024 season with a yet to be determined team. Â Â
Â
Trivino is the second Slippery Rock baseball player to have his jersey retired. Matt Adams was the first to be bestowed with the honor in 2015.
