Austin repeats as Defensive Athlete of the Week

For the second time in as many weeks, Slippery Rock men’s basketball standout Maceo Austin has been named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Slippery Rock University men's basketball standout Maceo Austin has been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Defensive Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Austin earned his latest honor after helping to lead The Rock to a 1-1 record in the form of an 80-77 road victory at Pitt-Johnstown and a near upset of No. 15 Gannon University.

Monday's announcement marks the second consecutive week that Austin has been named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week. He has also already been named the division's overall Athlete of the Week once this season.

Over two games last week, Austin recorded per game averages of 23.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 3.0 blocks while shooting 50 percent (17-of-34) from the field overall.

Austin opened the week by registering a 26-point, 12-rebound, five-block, three-steal double-double in SRU's narrow 95-90 overtime loss to nationally ranked Gannon at Morrow Field House. Austin's five-block outing was tied for the highest single-game total by a PSAC West athlete this season and was the most by a Rock player at Morrow Field House since Bobby Clifford's five blocks against Gannon in 2021-22.

Against Pitt-Johnstown, Austin went for 21 points, eight rebounds, four steals and one block as SRU earned its first road victory of the season: in addition to it being SRU's first triumph at UPJ since 2013.

In 15 games played this year, Austin has averaged 18.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.3 blocks per game. He currently ranks seventh in the PSAC in scoring, third in blocks, 11th in steals, 14th in field goal percentage (.452) and 18th in rebounding.

Slippery Rock has won six of its last nine games to improve its record to 7-9 overall and 5-5 inside the PSAC so far in 2023-24.

SRU returns to competition 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to host Clarion at Morrow Field House. The Rock have won three straight games against Clarion and have not lost to the Golden Eagles at home since 2016.
