LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Slippery Rock University defensive tackle
Munchie Johnson was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Defensive Athlete of the Week after his performance in The Rock's season opener against Wayne State last weekend.
Â
Johnson, a redshirt junior captain from District Heights, Maryland, tallied a career-high 11 total tackles and 2.0 tackles for loss while leading The Rock defense in a 28-17 win over Wayne State.
Â
The 11 tackles topped Johnson's former single-game high of eight stops from a game against West Chester Sept. 10, 2022. His five solo tackles and six assisted tackles were also both single-game highs.
Â
Johnson made his 26th consecutive start for Slippery Rock in the season opener, marking the longest active streak on the SRU roster. The PSAC weekly honor marks the first in his career.
Â
Slippery Rock stayed at No. 15 in this week's Division II national rankings after picking up a win in its season opener for the 14th straight year. The Rock return to action Saturday night at home against West Chester with kickoff set for 6 p.m.
